FIRE

Fire is the rapid oxidation of a

flammable material accompanied by
the production of light and heat.
FIRE

Fire is a combustion or burning in which

substances combine chemically with
oxygen from the air and typically give
out bright light, heat and smoke.
Fire is composed of three elements,
namely heat, fuel and oxygen.

The sides of the triangle represent the

interdependent ingredients needed for
fire.
• A heat source is responsible for the
initial ignition of fire, and is also
needed to maintain the fire and enable
it to spread.
Heat

• allows fire to spread by

drying out and
preheating nearby fuel
and warming
surrounding air.
• Fuel is any kind of combustible material. It’s
characterized by its moisture content, size,
shape, quantity and the arrangement in which it
is spread over the landscape. The moisture
content determines how easily it will burn.
EXAMPLES OF
FUEL IN FIRE
• Oxygen supports the chemical processes that occur
during fire. When fuel burns, it reacts with oxygen
from the surrounding air, releasing heat and
generating combustion products (gases, smoke,
embers, etc.).
• This process is known as oxidation.
• Air contains about 21% oxygen, and most
fires require at least 16% oxygen content
to burn.
What is a
Fire Tetrahedron?
• The fire tetrahedron
includes the three
components covered
in the fire triangle,
with the addition of
a chemical chain
reaction.
• The fire tetrahedron is a slightly more complex
model to describe the components needed to
ignite and sustain a fire. It is a four-sided
geometric representation of the four factors
necessary for fire
