Introduction
• During the winter in the arctic ocean , it is cold
than some of the sea water freezes. In the
Arctic Ocean, the area covered by sea ice
grows and shrinks over the course of the
year. Each fall, as less sunlight reaches the
Arctic and air temperatures begin to drop,
additional sea ice forms. The total area covered
by ice increases through the winter, usually
reaching its maximum extent in early March
Animals in the arctic ocean
• Seals hunt for fish in the water, but have to
come to surface to breath air.
• Polar bears patrol in the ice, looking for seals
to kill and eat . Polar bears are good
swimmers, and can move from one ice floe to
another
• Arctic foxes also look for food on ice
Algae and more
• Enough light passes through the ice to allow
tiny algae to grow on the underside of the ice
floes
• Tiny shrimp-like organisms eat the algae fish
