Plane Motion
• Rigid body moves under with or without
constraints.

Eg. Fan rotates about its fixed axis,

piston moves in a defined
direction, vehicle moves on a road
• Rigid Body / Deformable Body
• Free Body Diagram
• Equation of motion
• Velocity and Acceleration
• Angular Velocity and Acceleration
• Mass Moment of Inertia
• D’ Alembert’s Principle
Rigid Body Motion
• Consists of large number of particles
• No relative motion between particle
• Tensile strength
• Compressive strength
Deformable body
• Consists of large number of particles
• No displacement
• Relative motion between the particles
• Tensile strength and
• Compressive strength
Free Body Diagram
• 2D / 3D diagram of any rigid body by isolating
its supports
• Diagram in which mass of the RB, all external
forces, reaction forces are shown
Translation
• Angular acceleration is zero
• Net resultant is equal to inertia force
Rotation
• Acceleration is zero
• Net resultant moment is equal to couple of
moment (= Iα)
• Rotation only (a = rα and F< μR)
• Slip without Rotation (a = rα and F= μR)
• Rotation with slip(a≠ α and F= μR)
Problem on Translation
A sudden brake is applied to the speedy vehicle moving at
20 m/s and subsequently it is brought to rest after skidding
through a distance of 10 m. find the normal reaction and
frictional force if the mass of the truck is 2000 kg.
Problem on Rotation
A rectangular plate of 0.2m x 0.15 m weighing 50 kg is
suspended from two pins A and B. if pin b is suddenly
removed, find 1. The angular acceleration of the plate and 2.
The components of the reaction at pin A and immediately
after pin b has been removed.
Problem on Translation and
Rotation
1. A right circular cylinder of mass m and radius R is
suspended from a cord that is wound around its
circumference. If the cylinder is allowed to fall freely, find
the acceleration of its mass centre and tension in the cord.
Problem on Translation and
Rotation
A reciprocating engine mechanism is shown in fig. the crank
OA has a constant angular velocity of N= 300 RPM. The
crank OA is of length r=15.0 cm and the connecting rod AB is
of length L=100 cm. find the
1. The velocity of the piston when the crank makes an angle
θ = 300 with the horizontal,
2. The angular velocity of the connecting rod
Problem on Discs
• Two weights each of 50N are suspended from
a two stop pulley as shown in fig. Find the
acceleration of weight A and B. If the weight
of the pulley is 250N and radius of gyration is
50cm, find the tension in the string.
