POCT (Point-of-Care Testing)
POCT refers to medical diagnostic testing performed near the site of patient care
rather than in a centralized laboratory. The purpose of POCT is to provide rapid
results, allowing for quicker decision-making in patient care.

The vision of the institution is to become a leading center of excellence in every

Clinical Training and Support Services while its mission is to provide quality
healthcare services, Manpower Development through Training and Research for
the overall Benefit of the Patients and the Society.

Liver Function Test
Liver Function Tests (LFTs) are a group of blood tests that assess the health and
function of the liver. LFTs typically include measurements of various liver enzymes,
proteins, and other substances in the blood.
Common components of LFTs
Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
Gamma-Glutamine Transferase (GGT)
Bilirubin
Albumin
Alanine Amino Transferase (ALT)
ALT is commonly measured in blood Reference Range
tests to assess the health of the liver. Adult
The ALT level in the blood can rise
when there is damage or inflammation Male => 29—33U/L
in the liver, allowing ALT to leak into Females => 19—25U/L
the bloodstream. Therefore, elevated
ALT levels are often indicative of liver
injury or disease
Aspartate Amino transferase (AST)
AST is an enzyme found in various Reference Range
tissues of the body, with higher Adult
concentrations in the heart and liver. Male => 6—34U/L

AST is often measured through blood Females => 8—40U/L

tests to assess the health of the liver.
It's important to interpret AST levels
in conjunction with other liver
function tests.
Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)
GGT is an enzyme found in many Reference Range
tissues in the body, with the highest Male => 8 – 55U/L
concentrations in the liver and biliary
system. Female => 5 – 32U/L

GGT is often used as a marker of liver

function.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an Reference Range
enzyme found in various tissues Male => 40 – 129U/L
throughout the body, with higher
concentrations in the liver, bone, Female => 35 – 104U/L
intestines, and placenta.
Elevated levels of alkaline phosphatase
in the blood may indicate some liver
conditions such as hepatitis or
cirrhosis.
Bilirubin
Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment that forms during the normal breakdown of red
blood cells.
Measuring bilirubin levels is an important component of liver function tests. The
total bilirubin test measures both direct (conjugated) and indirect
(unconjugated) bilirubin levels in the blood.
Bilirubin testing is commonly performed in clinical laboratories using automated
analyzers such as Cobas c311, and it is an essential component of liver function
tests.
Albumin
Albumin is a protein that is produced by the liver and circulates in the blood. It
plays a crucial role in maintaining the oncotic pressure of blood, which is
important for regulating the movement of fluids between the blood vessels and
surrounding tissues.
Low albumin levels may suggest conditions like liver cirrhosis.
High levels of albumin are less common but can be associated with dehydration
or certain conditions like severe burns.
Key functions of albumin include, Oncotic Pressure Regulation, Transport of
Substances etc.
Conclusion
Liver function tests are crucial diagnostic tools that assess the health and
performance of the liver by measuring various markers such as enzymes,
proteins, and bilirubin levels in the blood. These tests provide valuable insights
into liver function and aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of liver diseases,
enabling timely intervention and patient care.
My training at chemical pathology point of care testing (POCT) has given me a
broad view on the important and relevance of biochemistry based on the medical
aspect.
