PROPERTIES OF AN ATV

1. Stress

Stress is the force applied to a material, divided by the material’s

cross-sectional area.

σ = stress (N/m2, Pa)

F = force (N)
A0 = original cross-sectional area (m2)

Stress is a measure of what the material feels from

externally applied forces. It is simply a ratio of the
external forces to the cross-sectional area of the
material.
2. Strain

• Strain, in physical sciences and engineering, number that describes relative deformation or change in shape and
size of elastic, plastic, and fluid materials under applied forces.

• The deformation, expressed by strain, arises throughout the material as the particles of which the material
is composed are slightly displaced from their normal position.
3. Torsional Test
1. Torsion tests twist a material or test component to a specified
degree, with a specified force, or until the material fails in torsion.

2. The purpose of a torsion test is to determine the behavior a material

or test sample exhibits when twisted or under torsional forces as a
result of applied moments that cause shear stress about the axis.
4. Factor of Safety
• It is the ratio of the ultimate strength of a member or piece of
material to the actual working stress or the maximum
permissible stress.

• Safety factors are often calculated using detailed analysis

because comprehensive testing is impractical on many projects,
such as bridges and buildings, but the structure's ability to carry
a load must be determined to a reasonable accuracy.

• Many systems are intentionally built much stronger than

needed for normal usage to allow for emergency situations,
unexpected loads, misuse, or degradation
Introduction to Finite Element
Methodology(FEM).

•The FEM is a general numerical method for

solving partial differential equations in two or three
space variables (i.e., some boundary value
problems).
•To solve a problem, the FEM subdivides a large
system into smaller, simpler parts that are called
finite elements. This process is called meshing
•The simple equations that model these finite
elements are then assembled into a larger system of
equations that models the entire problem.
• The FEM then approximates a solution by
minimizing an associated error function
MESHING
Meshing is basically called the first
step of the finite element
analysis(FEM)
In this we divide the entire structure
into small elements and intersection
of different elements is called nodes
which individually gets distorted and
gives us an collective result of the
entire structural.
ROLL CAGE

A roll cage is a specially engineered and

constructed frame built in the passenger
compartment of a vehicle to protect its
occupants from being injured or killed in
an accident, particularly in the event of a
rollover.
A. Objective: To perform Torsional test to ensure a structurally sound Roll cage prototype with impact resistance and Min deformation at
yield.

B. Methodology: Iterative Method is used to ensure that the stress factor of safety and deformation obtained is well under the safety
norms.

C. Mesh: Total nodes : 63368

Total elements : 126868

D. Material: AISI 4130,

Yield Strength AISI 4130−800 MPa

as shown in figure
while the rear suspension points are
kept fixed.

RESULTS OBTAINED
1. Stress Obtained

As you can see in the figure

the maximum stress obtained
during the analysis is 888.79
MPa and the minimum stress
obtained is 98.754 Mpa.
2. Factor of Safety

As you can see in the figure

the minimum factor of safety
obtained is 0.82809 which is
safe as its value is close to1 as
required for the design to be
safe.
3. Strain obtained

As you can see in the figure

the maximum strain
obtained during the
analysis is 0.00505 and the
minimum strain obtained is
0.
