How Do We Feel Included?
We are going to think about how it feels to be included or excluded.
First, we are going to work in small groups. Each group has a picture.
In your group, discuss:

• what you think the people in the picture are doing;

• how you think they might be feeling.

Can you imagine

Why Might People
Not Feel Included?
We are going to think about issues of exclusion brought up in the musical, WICKED.
WICKED tells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, including her
time at Shiz University and her unlikely friendship with the very popular Glinda.

Read the Script Extract you have

been given and think about how each
of these characters may feel excluded
or discriminated against in some way.

Think about these characters. How would they feel compared to those in the pictures
you discussed with your group?
Why Might People
Not Feel Included?
Our society is made up of lots of different people. At times, some people might not
feel included in every aspect of society. This could be because they are treated
unfairly, denied opportunities or even being threatened with harmful words or
actions. Can you think of any ways anyone in society might feel like this?
Who’s In?
We are now going to work in small groups to create a short drama piece showing
someone being excluded or discriminated against. Think carefully about who
would be in your scene, how they would behave and how they would feel.

Be ready to share your drama performance with the class.

Reaching Out
We are now going to watch the performances by the other groups. Let’s think
about how we can be a good audience. We need to:

Reaching Out
You also have a Reaching Out Recording Sheet to complete while you watch the
performances. Think carefully about the scene you have watched and use it to
complete your sheet.

Now, let’s think again about the drama piece you have just performed.

How could it have been different?

What would have to happen to make everyone feel included?

We are now going to create a poster to show all the ways we can make sure
everyone feels included. Remember, everyone being different is what makes the
world so exciting; let’s celebrate that!

Celebrating Diversity
We are all different and this is what makes the world so exciting! The scenes we
acted showed similarities between people but we are all totally unique. It is our
differences and our diversity that makes us work together so well.

Think of a time today when someone has helped you by seeing things differently. Talk
to your partner about this. What was possible when you celebrated that difference?

Celebrating Diversity
Now let’s think about the characters from WICKED.

Now, write one way that we can include people on your strip of paper. Display this
under the Diversity Display Banner.

It is our diversity that makes us truly fantastic and we should celebrate this.
