Georges Augustin Albert Charpy.

He was a French chemist . In 1905

he developed the
Charpy pendulum . In 1919 he was
elected a member of the
Academy of Sciences , in the
section on applications of science
to industry. In 1920 he became
Professor of Metallurgy at the
École nationale supérieure
des mines de Paris .
WHAT IS THIS
TEST ABOUT?
The impact test is carried out using equipment that contains
a pendulum that hits a specimen by means of a shock,
transferring a quantity of energy, generating a fracture.
WHAT IS THIS
TEST ABOUT?

During the test, a pendulum that starts its movement at a height h 0 , describes an
arc, hits and breaks the specimen, and reaches a final height h f lower.

If the initial and final heights of the pendulum are known, the difference in
potential energy can be calculated.
This difference is the impact energy absorbed by the sample when it failed.
● Impact energy (Energy absorbed at impact) or energy required
to break a specimen subjected to an impact load, is similar to the
concept of fracture toughness ( Ability of material to resist an
applied load when the material contains imperfections).
Basic test parameters

● Pendulum or impact
head with
determined mass
● Angle or height
measurement of the
pendulum
Try Charpy

The energy that is absorbed by the

specimen is given by the difference
between the initial power energy and
the final power energy of the
pendulum.
test material

• The specimen has a standard notch to facilitate crack

initiation.
• Specimens that fail brittle break in two halves,
whereas those with greater ductility bend without
breaking.
Ductile-brittle transition temperature

A material subjected to shock

loading during service
conditions should have a
transition temperature below
the operating temperature
determined by the environment
surrounding the material.
Ductile to brittle transition
temperature

It is the temperature below which a

material behaves brittle in a
impact test. The change from ductile to
brittle also depends on the speed of
deformation. A material that is subjected to
an impact blow in service must have
a lower transition temperature than
environment temperature

examples
A test piece with a square section of 10 mm on
each side and a notch of 2 mm in the center of
its faces is subjected to a resilience test with a
20 kg pendulum that falls from 90 cm, and
which, after breaking, reaches 70 cm.
Determine:
a. Energy absorbed in the shock by the
specimen.
b. material resilience
