PRELIMINARY DESIGN
• Preliminary design of beam, slab and column was done.
The size of the menbers are dependent on the limit state of serciceability on deflection and
cracking. For this, IS code 456-2000 is referred.
 Preliminary design of slab
Depth of slab: 150mm
 Preliminary design of beam
Size of beam: 300mm*450mm
Size of secondary beam: 300mm*450mm
 Preliminary design of column
Size of column: 600mm*600mm

a. Drift Check
b. Modal Results
c. Check for eccentricity
d. Modal mass participation ratio
e. Calculation of base shear for analyzing the lateral force

Codal provision:
5.6.3 Inter-Story Deflections
The ratio of the inter-story deflection to the corresponding story height shall not exceed:
0.006 at serviceability limit state
0.025 at ultimate limit state: Since ULS values are to be multiplied by ductility factor=4
0.025/4=0.00675 at ULS

Preliminary Result
• Time period of model=1.001s closely matches assumed value 1.017s
• Drift ratios were higher than permissible.
• Modal mass participation ratio for 12 modes was greater than 90% (OK)
• Eccentricity greater than 10%

Mid-term Project Presentation| Department of Civil Engineering, NCIT| Pokhara University| June 2023 26
Conclusion
• The model needs shear wall to reduce drifts and to withstand torsion due to eccentricity

Limitation
• Soil test was not performed.
• Detailed design of water supply and sanitary work was not performed.
