 INTRODUCTION

Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid is a natural water

soluble vitamin found in citrus and other fruits and
vegetable. It is also sold as a dietary supplement and as
topical serum ingredient to treat Melasma(dark pigment
spots) and wrinkles on the face. It is used to treat and
prevent Scurvy.
Ascorbic acid is a potent reducing and
antioxidant agent that functions in fighting bacterial
infections.in detoxifying reactions and in the formation of
collagen in fibrous tissue,teeth,bones,connective tissue,
skin and capillaries.
 USES OF VITAMIN C(ASCORBIC ACID)

• Useful in lowering serum uric acid levels

• Useful in the treatment of Pneumonia
• Used in the treatment of scurvy
• Increase the absorption of Iron from GIT
• Used in chronic iron toxicity
• Used as antioxidant in colors
• Reduce Neurological disorders
 SCURVY
Scurvy is a Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) deficiency that results from
a few weeks to months of no vitamin C or 20 to 40 days. It has
been known for centuries as the potentially fatal disease.
People with Scurvy are at risk of:
 Alcoholics
 Children
 Dialysis patient
 People with chronic malnutrition
 Elderly
 Malabsorption Disorders
 SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Symptoms usually develop after atleast 3 months of Vitamin c deficiency:

• Weakness and fatigue

• Bruising easily
• Hair, Teeth loss
• Bleeding from weakening blood vessel
• Skin problems
• Loss of appetite
• Impaired bone growth
• Loss of weight
 ASCORBIC ACID TEST
Preparations:
We have to do certain preparations for Vitamin C(Ascorbic Acid) the
test.These preparations are as follows.

• We have to do urine test and blood test for this. Before urine test,6-8
glasses of water have to be drunk.
• We should not eat food rich in Vitamin C before the test.
• It is preferred to do overnight fasting

Uses of Vitamin C Test:

The uses of this test are as follows:
• If its deficiency is detected, we can cure scurvy, cancer and infections.
• Its excessive consumption cause vomiting,diarrhea,cramps. headache,
and kidney stones
• It avoids worsening of condition.
 PROCEDURE
The procedure includes the blood test and urine test whose steps are as follows:

• The arm is held tightly and main vein had to be searched.

• After removing needle cap, the needle is inserted into that vein.
• The blood is drawn into the syringe and the needle is removed.
• The blood is then transferred to blood container for blood analysis.
• Urine is collected into the clean container through urination in the toilet.

• Serum Volume (2 ml)

• Needle
• Clean Container
• Blood Container
 NORMAL VALUE OF TEST

Normal Value of Serum Ascorbic Acid test for all age groups is
0.20-1.90 mg/dl.

LOW LEVEL OF VITAMIN C

• High Blood pressure

• Gallbladder Disease
• Stroke
• Atherosclerosis
• Some Cancer
 TREATMENT

• Ascorbic Acid can be administered orally

• Treatment of scurvy can begin within 48 hours of
Vitamin C consumption
• Full recovery is expected within 2 weeks
• Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
• Take supplements by consulting your doctor
• Drink plenty of fresh fruits juices
