SUBJECT
The subject of art refers to
what the work represents.
Some artworks have
subject, others do not.
Two subjects of art:
Representational or objective art-
art that have subjects
Non-Representational or non-
objective art-art that do not have
subjects.
Sources of the
Subject
Nature
This is the most popular
source of objective art.
Ex: Mountains, trees,
cloudscape, Seascape
People
Human subjects, whether real or
imagined, are the most
interesting.
Ex: painting of a woman or men,
sculpture of people.
History
Historical art works depict real
events which are verifiable facts
that occurred in the past.
Ex: The making of Philippine Flag

Legends
Artworks based on legends present to
viewers of art something tangible even
when unverified. Art brings life to these
stories.
Ex: alamat ng makahiya, Si malakas at si
maganda
Religion
These artworks are based
on the sacred texts: The
Holy Bible and
Christianity
Mythology
Artworks can also be based on
the stories of the Gods and
Goddesses of Ancient Greece,
Rome and Egyptians.
Dreams and Fantasy
The intrigue of the unconscious
also inspires artists to present it
through art for others see,
relate and interpret.
Technology
The modern era with its tall
buildings and amazing
machines are also subject
matter for the artist.

Realism, in the arts, is the
accurate, detailed,
unembellished depiction

Realism Realism rejects
imaginative idealization in
favor of a close
observation of outward
appearances
Fernando Amorsolo - Filipino painter active in the
early half of the 20th century whose masterful
handling of light made him one of Asia’s most
prominent portraitists and landscape artists.
His compositions often depict the traditional culture,
customs and celebrations of the Filipino community.
Popularly known for his
craftsmanship and mastery in the
use of light, he was regarded as
the Father of Philippine Realism
for his numerous realistic
paintings.
Fabian dela Rosa – scenes of
rice planting and harvesting —
he created a series of paintings
that captured the popular
imagination.
His 1922 painting
Planting Rice soon
appeared on
calendars, posters,
and travel
brochures.
An art that does not attempt
to represent an accurate

marks to achieve its effect.
Abstraction indicates a
departure from reality in
depiction of imagery in art.
Picasso is a well-known artist who used
abstraction in many of his paintings and
sculptures: figures are often simplified;
distorted, exaggerated, or geometric. Girl

A. Distortion
A distortion is a change,
twist, or exaggeration that
makes something appear
different from the way it
really is. You can distort an
image, a thought, or even
an idea.
Distortion is the alteration of the
original shape of something, be it a
person or an object. While this is
normally not the desired outcome in
most instances, it is exactly what
artists who use the technique that
he/she wants.
B. Elongation
"Elongation art" refers to
paintings that feature figures
that are painted with their
forms elongated much more
than they are in reality.
Elongation is a form of
abstract art that often depicts
the stretched forms of people
or objects in nature.
Amedeo Modigliani – an artist who created
elongation art in early 20th-century and renowned
for his use of elongation in portraits as well as
more abstract paintings.
Ernie Barnes and Italian Renaissance artist
Parmigianino - are modern African-American
painter who are known for using elongation in their
paintings., who is noted for the painting "Madonna
of the Long Neck.
The Madonna does not
have normal human
proportions; her neck,
shoulders and fingers
have all been elongated
to make her appear
more elegant and
graceful.
C. Cubism
One of the most influential art movements of
the early twentieth century and one that
remains a major source of inspiration for many
artists today is Cubism.
Cubism marked a major turning point in the
whole evolution of modernist art.
This movement was pioneered
by Pablo Picasso (Spanish,
1881-1973) and Georges
Braque (French, 1882-1963.
This painting, Les
Demoiselles
d'Avignon, was
painted in 1907 and is
the most famous
example of cubism
painting.
