Green Assets
• A green asset is an asset that generates more energy than it
consumes. This creates a positive impact on the environment,
as well as provides a net positive benefit to the economy.
• Green assets cover all-natural assets that facilitate our lives on
this planet and protect us from the ills of global warming due to
the rapid environmental degradation of the forest.
• The green assets and infrastructure comprise substantial part of that
long-term approach to managing the carbon performance of the
organization. The three major phases or activities associated with the
lifecycle of these assets is depicted:
• the way they are established or procured,
• the manner in which they are operated or run, and
• the strategies for their disposal or demolishment.
The three major activities relating to infrastructure
assets has the following carbon repercussions:
• The assets made up of building, data center, devices and vehicles.
• Establish (Procure) - deals with the green credentials of the asset in
terms of its design and development. For example, the original design
of a car engine or a mobile phone that make it carbon efficient.
• Operate (Run) – deals with total carbon contribution of the
organization by means of operation of assets.
• Dispose(Demolish) – deals with the eventual phase of an asset and
impacts the overall carbon footprint of an organization.
Types of Assets (Categories) and Their
Impact on the Environment
Types of Assets Impact on Environment
Buildings and Long-term impact as major environmental considerations should be during
Facilities architecture and construction. Purpose of buildings, people movements,
geographical locations (weather), and durability of the building impact their overall
carbon contribution.

Data Centre This is a special purpose building to house data servers. In addition to the standard
building considerations, the ratio between power usage by the servers versus the
rest of the power is a popular environmental consideration

Devices Design, development, procurement, operation, and usage of devices is considered

here.
Vehicles Direct fuel emissions, pollution level of the type of fuel, design of the engines, and
so on. Procurement, operations and disposal activities apply to vehicles used by the
organization
Green or sustainable buildings
• A green or sustainable building is a building
that, because of its construction and features,
can maintain or improve the quality of life of
the environment in which it is located.
• To do this, it is essential to achieve a high level of
efficiency: reducing the consumption of energy,
water and other resources minimizes pollution.
• The LEED certificate (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) is the internationally
accepted official recognition that establishes
whether a building deserves to be considered
sustainable.
Characteristics of green buildings
• Location and transport
• Sustainable sites
• Efficient use of water
• Energy and atmosphere
• Materials and resources
• Indoor environmental quality
• Design innovation
• Regional priority
Ten sustainable buildings that amaze the
world
• Iberdrola Tower, Bilbao, Spain
• Beitou Public Library, Taipei, Taiwan
• California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, USA
• World Trade Center, Manama, Bahrain
• Pixel Building, Melbourne, Australia
• Museum of Tomorrow, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
• Turning Torso, Malmö, Suecia
• Parkroyal Collection, Singapur, Singapur
• Shanghai Tower, Shanghai, China
• Reforma Tower, Mexico City, Mexico
Green data center
• A green data center is a repository for the storage, management
and dissemination of data in which the mechanical, lighting,
electrical and computer systems are designed to maximize
energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. The
construction and operation of a green data center includes
advanced technologies and strategies.
The following are examples of some of the technologies
and strategies used in green data centers:
• minimized building footprints;
• low-emission building materials, carpets and paints;
• sustainable landscaping;
• e-waste recycling;
• catalytic converters on backup generators;
• alternative energy, such as photovoltaic technology, heat pumps
and evaporative cooling technology; and
• hybrid or electric vehicles.
Some benefits of green data centers are:
• lowers long-term operating costs;
• reduces space requirements;
• lowers carbon emissions;
• decreases water use;
• reduces waste output;
• cuts electricity consumption; and
• emphasizes use of renewable and sustainable data center
Green Networking
• Green networking is the practice of selecting energy-efficient
networking technologies and products and minimizing resource
use whenever possible.
Green networking practices include the
following:
• updating IT policies to support the use of green technologies and
resources;
• increasing the use of off-premises networking, such as cloud services;
• updating office space and data centers to be more energy-efficient;
• implementing network virtualization;
• practicing server consolidation;
• upgrading older equipment for newer, more energy-efficient products;
• employing systems management to increase efficiency;
• substituting remote working, remote administration and video
conferencing for travel; and
• organizing periodic reviews by environmental experts to validate green
activities.
What is the goal of green networks?
• A green data center, which typically houses the nerve
center of a company's networking infrastructure, is used
for the storage, management and dissemination of data.
The physical components of the building structure --
such as environmental systems, security systems,
lighting, electrical and computing resources -- are
selected and deployed to minimize the environmental
impact, while maximizing energy efficiency.
In this example of a green NOC, several elements achieve energy efficiency.
Green networking centers conform to one or both of the
following two metrics that measure energy usage and
sustainability.
1. Power usage effectiveness
Developed in 1997, power usage effectiveness (PUE) measures
the power consumption of a data center. It is the ratio of the
power provided to the data center divided by the power that the
equipment in the data center uses. The goal is to have the ratio
come as close as possible to one, which indicates effective
power usage. PUE is a metric used to assess the efficiency of a
data center. Networking equipment is among the many
components found in data centers. Many networking devices in
use -- such as servers, switches, firewalls and routers -- can be
found that are environmentally friendly.
2. Carbon usage effectiveness
• Carbon usage effectiveness (CUE) is a metric that was
developed by The Green Grid, an affiliate member of
the Information Technology Industry Council. CUE is the
ratio of carbon dioxide emissions that the data center
generates divided by the energy consumption of data
center equipment. The goal is to have the lowest
possible value, which indicates the data center and
NOC are effectively controlling carbon dioxide
emissions and reducing the carbon footprint.
LEED and Energy Star certifications validate
building and IT energy efficiency.
GREEN BUSINESS PROCESS
MANAGEMENT
Green BPM
• Green business process management (Green BPM) deals with the overall management
of all internal and external processes of an organization from a green perspective.
• BPM is a well-established industry practice encompassing process modeling,
reengineering, and optimization of processes, and the measuring, merging, and
elimination of business processes.
• Green business processes are environmentally conscious business processes that are
necessary, efficient, effective, agile, and measureable in the context of an organization.
• In the green process optimization exercise, processes are challenged for their necessity
in the first place, others are optimized for efficiency, some others are made more
effective and agile, and all are measured in order to ascertain their carbon
contribution.
• The exploration of processes in this manner leads to many opportunities to improve
and optimize them during a green enterprise transformation.
