Properties of Whole Numbers
3. DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY (BREAKING IT UP)
MULTIPLICATION
Use different methods to break up the first block into two sections to calculate the total:

14 x 6 = (10 + 4) x 6

6 = (10 + 4) x 6
= (10 x 6) + (4 x 6)
= 60 + 24
= 84

3. DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY (BREAKING IT UP)
MULTIPLICATION
Calculate the following without a calculator:

98 x 7 = (90 + 8) x 7 – brake up the big number in tens and ones

= (90 + 8) x 7 – multiply the 7 inside the bracket with each number

= (90 x 7) + (8 x 7)
= 630 + 56 – add up the numbers

= 686

MULTIPLICATION
Use the variables ‘d’, ‘e’, and ‘f ‘to illustrate the distributive property of adding whole numbers

When multiplying a group

numbers by a bracket. It
multiply (distributes) with
each number inside the
brackets.
