WHAT IS DEFORESTATION?
Deforestation is defined as the removal or thinning of forests by
cutting down trees. The area that has been cleared by
deforestation is used by human beings (for constructing factories,
houses, roads, and dams or for cultivating crops). The excess
global demand for wood also leads to deforestation.

CAUSES OF DEFORESTATION
Introduction of commercial forestry/scientific forestry
 Land was cleared for commercial agricultural and plantation agriculture by colonial
government.
 Good quality good was needed for the construction of ships in England to maintain
the naval force.
 Timbers were also used by the colonial government for the construction of sleeper in
the railway line.

COMMERCIAL FORESTRY
 Large scale deforestation let to the introduction of commercial/scientific
forestry by the colonial government.
 In which the forest were cleared and in their place one type of tree which
provided them with good quality timber was planted in straight rows like
plantations

FOREST ACT AND TRIBAL
Forest were classified as: MOVEMENT
• Reserved/restricted forest
• Protected forest
• Tribal/village forest

 Tribals lost their right in the forest homeland


 Tribal were forced to do begar and shifting cultivation was banned
 They lost all means of protesting by organizing movements like Birsa movement, Bastar
rebellion, Samin’s challenge etc
