Write formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence

Use the formula to find the nth term or unknown term of an arithmetic
sequence.

Before we find other higher terms of a sequence, let us
first find lower terms. In an arithmetic sequence; 3, 8,
13, 18, … what is the 15th term?
Solution:
a. By adding the common difference to each of the preceding terms,
we get the following values

b. Thus the 15th term is 73.
These terms can be written in the following manner
as a short cut.
Since the common difference (d) is 5
a1 = 3 a13 = 3 + 5(12) = 63
a2 = 3 + 5(1) = 8 a14 = 3 + 5(13) = 68
a3 = 3 + 5(2) = 13 a15 = 3 + 5(14) = 73
a4 = 3 + 5(3) = 18 The nth term of an arithmetic sequence an

a5 = 3 + 5(4) = 23 given by:

an = a1 + d(n – 1)
Example 1:
Find the 18th term of the arithmetic sequence 3, 10, 17, 24, …

Given: Solution: an = a1 + d(n – 1)


a1 = 3 a18 = 3 + 7(18 – 1)
d = 10 - 3 = 7
a18 = 3 + 7(17)
n = 18
a18 = 3 + 119

Therefore, the 18th term is 122 a18 = 122


Example 2:
In the AS: 7, 10, 13, 16 . . . Find n if a n = 304

Given: Solution: an = a1 + d(n – 1)


304 = 7 + 3(n – 1)
a1 = 7
304 = 7 + 3n - 3
d = 10 - 7= 3 304 = 4 + 3n
304 - 4 = 3n
an = 304
300 = 3n
n=? =

Thus, 304 is the 100th term of the AS n = 100


Example 3:
The 4th term of an AS is 27 and the 11th term is 69. Find the common difference, the
first term, and the 25th term of the sequence.

Given: Solution: an = a1 + d(n – 1)


a4 = 27 ►a1
a11 = 69 ►a8 d=

Example 3:
The 4th term of an AS is 27 and the 11th term is 69. Find the common difference, the
first term, and the 25th term of the sequence.

a11 = 69 a25 = 9 + 6(25 – 1)
a4 = a1 + d(n – 1)

27 = a1 + 6(4 – 1)

27 – 18 = a1
Thus, the common difference is 6, the first term
a1= 9 is 9 and the 25th term is 153
Example 4:
Find the specified nth term of each arithmetic sequence: 25, 23, 21,
19, . . . 19th term

Given: Solve for a19: an = a1 + d(n – 1)


a1= 25 a19 = 25 + -2(19 – 1)
d = 23-25 = -2
a19 = 25 + -2(18)
a19 = ?
a19 = 25 - 36

Thus, the 19th term is -11 a19 = -11


Example 5:
Solved what is asked. If a1 = -4, a25 = -100, what is the value of
a100?
Given: Solve for d: Solve for a100:
a1= -4 d= an = a1 + d(n – 1)
a25= -100 d= a100 = -4 + -4(100 – 1)
a100 = ? a100 = -4 + -4(99)

a100 = -4 - 396

Thus, the 100th term is -400

MEAN
What is Arithmetic Mean
The first and last terms of a finite arithmetic sequences
are callled arithmetic extremes and the terms in
between are called arithmetic means. In the sequence
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24; the terms 4 and 24 are the
arithmetic extremes, while 8, 12, 16, 20 are the
arithmetic means. Also, 8 is the arithmetic mean of
arithmetic extremes 4 and 12.
Examples :
1. What is the arithmetic mean between 10 and 24?

Thus, the arithmetic mean .


2. Insert three arithmetic means between 8 and 16.

Use the formula for d = a2= 8 + 2 = 10


d= a3= 10 + 2 = 12
d= a4= 12 + 2 = 14

3. Find the missing terms of the arithmetic sequence:

d= a5= 22 + 8 = 30
a6= 30 + 8 = 38

Thus, the arithmetic mean are

4. Insert 3 arithmetic mean between -5 and -13.

d= a2 = -5 + (-2) = -7

d= a3 = -7 + (-2) = -
