WHAT ARE DROUGHTS?
• A drought is a prolonged period with-less-than average amounts of rain or snow in a
particular region. The severity of the drought depends on the amount of time that a region
receives below-average precipitation. For example, a few weeks without rain could stress a
farmer’s crops during the growing season. This is called a flash drought.
CAUSES OF DROUGHTS
• A drought is caused by drier than normal conditions that can eventually lead to water supply
problems. Really hot temperatures can make a drought worse by evaporating moisture from
the soil.
• Droughts are also caused by have no water bodies such as: rivers, lakes etc.
• They are also caused by low precipitation.
EFFECTS OF DROUGHTS
• Reduced stream and river flows can increase the concentration of pollutants in water and cause
stagnation. Higher water temperatures in lakes and reservoirs lead to reduced oxygen levels. These
levels can affect fish and other aquatic life and water quality..
• Drought can limit the growing season and create conditions that encourage insect and disease
infestation in certain crops like carrots. Low crop yields can result in rising food prices and shortages,
potentially leading to malnutrition.Drought can also affect the health of livestock raised for food.
• The dusty, dry conditions and wildfires that often accompany drought can harm health. Fire and dry
soil and vegetation increase the number of particulates that are suspended in the air, such as pollen,
smoke, and fluorocarbons. These substances can irritate the bronchial passages and lungs, making
chronic respiratory illnesses like asthma worse.
HOW TO
AVOID
DROUGHTS
• Have drought-preventative water
fixtures.
• Have smart watering systems.
• Use the US drought monitor.
• Desalination.
• Use more porous concrete and
other surfacing materials.
Furthermore, you canot stop
Droughts but only prevent them
from happening.
HOW TO AVOID THE EFFECTS OF DROUGHTS
• Water flow is naturally influenced by the catchment and the shape of the river. Humans can
alter water flow by straightening channels, building dams and taking water from rivers for
irrigation or other uses.
• Using pathogen-free seeds produced in drought-prone regions, hot water for seed treatment,
soil solarization, control of plant diseases with germicidal compounds of seeds. Also crop
diseases can be prevented by spraying chemicals.
• Using dust binders, these solutions can be applied to surfaces, such as unsealed or unpaved
roads, on a site during construction. They strengthen the surface, binding particles to make
increase density, to prevent dust creation and erosion.
