INTRODUCTION
POEM
Driving from my parent’s home to Cochin last
Friday
Morning, I saw my mother, beside me,
Doze, open mouthed, her face ashen like that
Of a corpse and realised with pain
That she thought away, and looked but soon
Put that thought away, and looked out at young
Trees sprinting, the merry children spilling
Out of their homes, but after the airport’s
CENTRAL IDEA
• Aging is an important phase of human life.
A person enters his childhood, experiences
youth when he is full of energy and dreams to
have luxury of life. Finally, he approaches his
old age and encounters death. Relationship
between people becomes stronger at every
aspect of life and they can’t bear separation
due to aging.
BODY
The poem begins with the speaker, presumably Kamala Das
herself, sitting next to her mother in a car. They are on their way
to the poet's ancestral home, which is described as "a darkening
hill". The car is moving fast, but the mother's eyes are closed,
and she is dozing off.
The speaker then describes her mother's appearance, noting
that she looks fragile and weak, with her white hair and
wrinkled face. She wonders how long her mother will live, and
whether she will be able to see her again after this trip.
The speaker then turns to her mother and touches her, trying to
feel her presence and reassure herself that she is still alive. She
describes her mother's breath as "short" and "quick", and
wonders if she is in pain.

Conclusion
"My Mother at Sixty Six" is a moving the themes
of aging, mortality, and the fragility of life.
Through her vivid descriptions and poignant
reflections, Kamala Das conveys the deep love
and bond that exists between a mother and her
child, as well as the pain and sadness that come
with the realization that this bond will eventually
be broken.
