DESIGN OF BARRAGE

IRRIGATION ENGINEERING CE-431 L

Week 1
PURPOSE OF A BARRAGE
 Barrage is a weir provided with gates.
 Barrage is built across a river to;
• Divert water
• Raise level of supply
• Silt control
• Permanent head works for canal
• Better regulation than weir
COMPONENTS OF A BARRAGE
 Main barrage portion (u/s concrete floor, crest, u/s and d/s glacis and d/s floor)
 Sheet piles (u/s, intermediate and d/s sheet piles)
 Inverted filter (Provided between d/s sheet piles and d/s flexible aprons)
 Flexible apron (Protection provided to cover scour depth)
 Under sluices (Bays at extreme ends adjacent to canal regulator)
 Divide wall (Separates under-sluices and normal bays)
 Fish ladder
 Guide banks
 Flood embankments

BARRAGE SITE CONSIDERATIONS
 Site must have good command over area.
 Minimum width of river.
 Good land approach.
 Easy diversion after construction.
BARRAGE DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
 Over flow or surface flow consideration.
• Estimation of design flood, length of barrage, retrogression, accretion, and
barrage profile.
 Subsoil flow considerations.
• Uplift pressure, undermining and creep theories.

BARRAGE DESIGN EXAMPLE
Maximum discharge 500,000 cusecs Sec B R*75+475000
Minimum discharge 12,000 cusecs
River bed level (RBL) 582.00 ft
Highest flood level (HFL) 600.00 ft (without barrage)
Lowest flood level (LFL) 587.00 ft
Minimum pond level 598.00 ft (After construction of barrage/ on FSL)
Number of canals on right bank 2
Number of canals on left bank 1
Maximum discharge of one canal 3,500 cusecs

BARRAGE DESIGN EXAMPLE
Step 1: Minimum stable wetted perimeter
Pw  2.67 Qmax = 1890 ft
Lacey’s looseness co efficient (LLC) = (Hilly areas)1.1 to 1.8 (Plain areas)
Width between abutments ; Wa = Pw × LLC = 1.1 to 1.8 times Pw = 3400 ft
Try;
50 bays @ 60’ = 3000 feet
47 piers @ 7’ = 329 feet
1 fish ladder = 26 feet
2 divide walls = 30 feet
Wa = 3385 feet

Discharge between abutments q abt = 500,000/3385 = 147.7 cfs/ft

Discharge over weir crest q weir = 500,000/3000 = 166.7 cfs/ft

BARRAGE DESIGN EXAMPLE
E1 = Do + ho + Afflux = 18 + 3 + 0.85 = 21.85 feet

Level of E1 = E1 + RBL (USEL) = 582 + 21.85 = 603.85 feet

Crest level ; CL= USEL - Eo = 603.85 – 14.81 = 589.04 feet

Crest level of under sluices = 586.04 feet
Assume no of bays under sluices =5
