Introduction

 WHAT IS BLACK SPOT ?

According to Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Government of
India, road accident black spot on National Highways is a road stretch of about 500m in
length in which either 5 road accidents (involving fatalities/grievous injuries) took place
during last three calendar years or 10 fatalities took place during last three calendar years.
Need of the study

According to the ‘Ministry of Road Transport and

Highways’ annual report on road accidents released in 2022
reported 4,61,312 incidents in 2022, which caused injuries to
4,43,366 people. The year marked an increase of 11.9 per cent
in accidents, 9.4 per cent in fatalities, and 15.3 per cent in
injuries compared to 2021.

 STUDY AREA : Among total length of 2870 km of

NH 48, Satara- Kagal 132.760 km has selected for
the study, as this major corridor connecting North
India to South India passing through Maharashtra.

Major Factors Causing Accidents on NH 48

Object hazard sign boards are missing Roadside Hazard Signs Road studs Missing
Suggestions and Improvements

 Provide parking so that vehicles cannot stand on the side of the road which creates the
problem for pedestrians and for vehicles also.
 Provide crossing and footpath on both the sides of the road for the safety of pedestrians
 Proper lighting should be provided during the night.
 Installing metal beam crash barriers along the highway.
 Regular road inspection after particular time interval.
Suggestions and Improvements

 Install road studs at critical points such as sharp curves, pedestrian crossings, and areas prone to fog
or low visibility. This helps drivers maintain proper lane discipline.
 Implement a routine inspection schedule to check the condition and visibility of object hazard sign
boards. Replace any damaged or faded signs promptly.
 Involve the local community in reporting areas where object hazard sign boards are needed.
 Use Roadside hazard signs to warn drivers about potential dangers or obstacles along the road, such
as curves, intersections, construction zones, or other hazards.
NH 6

 STUDY AREA : Indian National Highway 6 (NH6) is also known

as Asian Highway 46 (AH46), a major route in India which
connects Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand and
West Bengal states. This Highway route comes under the Asian
Highway project which covers a distance of 1,949km.
 Road stretch- Amravati- Nagpur National Highway.
 Distance- 152km.

Technology, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India
NH 6

Based on the analysis of accident data, top

five black spots along the national highway is
determined.
1.Ring Road
2. Wadi Bazaar
3. Futala Chowk
4. Marwa Transport At Waddhamna
Causes And Suggestions

1. Ring Road
• No proper markings are there on the road.
• Over speeding and drunken driving led to accidents particularly during
the night.
Suggestions and Improvements
• Provide the speed limit sign boards on National Highway
• Provide proper road marking and road studs on the road.
• Wearing helmet should be strictly checked.
Causes And Suggestions

2.Wadi & Wadi bazaar

•Unauthorized parking causes serious jams and accidents

•Footpaths are not provided

Suggestions and Improvements

• Provide parking so that vehicles cannot stand on the side of the road
which creates the problem for pedestrians and for vehicles also.

• Provide footpath on both the sides of the road for the safety of
pedestrians

Causes And Suggestions

3.Futala Chowk
• Most of the vehicles are parking on the road itself which leads to traffic jams.
• Sudden overtakes and Over speeding is common during nights.
Suggestions and Improvements
• Provide separate bus bays for avoiding delay of other vehicles at the bus stops.
• Proper lighting should be provided during the night
•Implement advanced traffic management systems that use real-time data to
optimize signal timing based on traffic flow.

Causes And Suggestions

4.Marwa transport at Waddhamna

Marwa transport area is normally dealing with the loading and unloading of goods. Most of
the accidents in warddhamna lead to loss of life.
• Trucks play a major role in this area.
• Over speeding of trucks
Suggestions and Improvements
• Take suitable enforcement measures to reduce the speed of vehicles.
• Remove or repair potholes for the safety of road users.
• Remove the illegal constructions from the road.
Conclusion

 The spot on the road where traffic accidents frequently occur is termed as black spots.
 The identification and analysis of accident black spots help in identifying the stretches
where Accidents are more and these spots reduce the road safety in general.
 The analysis also help to find out the most vulnerable accident locations or black spots on
highway and provide necessary improvements and solution for them.
