considered part of Europe.

the Emerald Isle.
The capital city of Ireland is Dublin.

Ireland is on an island next to Great


Britain. There are actually two parts of
the island. One part is the country of
Ireland (the Republic of Ireland). The
other part is Northern Ireland, which
belongs to the United Kingdom.

The total population of Ireland is over 4


million people.

The capital city of Dublin is the major port for the country of Ireland. It has
a temperate climate due to the fact that it is located on a bay and the River
Liffey. Dublin Castle is a famous landmark of the city.

• The currency of Ireland is the Euro.


• Originally, farming was a major part of Ireland’s economy. Currently, the service
industry is leading Ireland’s economy. Tourism is included in the category of
service.
• Manufacturing is also very important to the economy of Ireland.

Ireland’s government is a parliamentary democracy. The people of Ireland elect the


president in a direct election. The president can serve two terms, and each
presidential term is seven years. Ireland’s parliament is called the Oireachtas. There
are two houses in the Oireachtas: a house of representatives and a senate. There is
also a prime minister who is the leader of the parliament.

Ireland’s climate is classified as a mild temperate oceanic climate. This


means that the Atlantic Ocean moderates Ireland’s climate, so there are no
extremes. Ireland has a significant amount of rainfall: between 30 and 50
inches per year.

other ⅕ of the population is from various
regions of the world.
• Both English and Irish are the official
languages of Ireland.
• Over 75% of the population is Roman

accordion, the Celtic harp, and the fiddle.
