Lesson 3: Kinematic

Equations of Motion
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of this learning session, the students are expected
to:

• convert a verbal description of a physical situation involving

uniform acceleration in one dimension into a mathematical
description; and
• illustrate Least Count and Uncertainty figure through an
example.

Introduction
The study of motion is divided into kinematics and dynamics.
KINEMATICS describes motion in terms of displacement, velocity, and
acceleration. DYNAMICS is the study of force relation to motion.

TRANSLATION is the term used in physics for motion in a straight line.

It is commonly described by three quantities: displacement, velocity,
and acceleration.

DISPLACEMENT
vs DISTANCE

A POSITION refers to the location

of an object with respect to a
REFERENCE POINT OR ORIGIN.
Consider a student walking from his house to school.
The house can be set as the origin, and the initial
position of the students is set at = 0. He walked to the
school 100m away from his house in 80s. His final
position x is now 100m to the east of his initial
position. The change in the student’s position is called
DISPLACEMENT, written as

“ DISPLACEMENT refers to the
straight-line distance between an
object’s initial and final positions. In
symbols,
= -
Displacement is Vector Quantity.

DISTANCE refers to the
total length of path taken
by an object in moving
from its initial to final

position.
Distance is Scalar
Quantity.

Sample Problem:

Starting from the church, a procession

has to take the following route: 50 m,
north; 40 m, east; and 60 m, north. To
go back, it has to follow the same route
but in the opposite direction.
(a)What is the total distance traveled?
(b) What is the total displacement?

For his early morning exercise,

Willy jogged 12 times around a
circular track of radius 5.0 . Find
his total distance traveled and his
displacement.

1. A car travels along a straight road 100 m east then 50
m west. Find distance and displacement of the car.

2. A person walks 4 meters east, then walks 3 meters

north. Determine distance and displacement.

3. A runner travels around rectangle track with length =

50 meters and width = 20 meters. After
travels around rectangle track two times, runner back
to starting point. Determine distance and displacement.

4) Car’s speedometer reads 10,500 km at the
start of a trip and 10,700 km at the end.
Determine distance and displacement.

5) If a person walks 10 meters east and then

10 meters west, what is the total distance
covered and the total displacement?
