STATISTICS

AND
PROBABILITY
Objective :
At the end of the period , the students are expected to :

Solve problems involving random sampling:

a. Stratified random sampling

b. Systematic random sampling

Identify the type of
sampling technique used by
the researcher in each of the
following situations: simple
random sampling, systematic
random sampling, stratified
random sampling, or cluster
random sampling.
A Teacher Conducted A Study
In her School To Determine
Who Were Better In
Mathematics : The Boys or The
Girls
STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLING
In a recent research that was
conducted in a private school,
the subjects of the study were
selected by using the Table of
Random Numbers.
Simple Random Sampling
A researcher interviewed people from
each town in the province of Albay for
his research on population .
Cluster Random Sampling
A researcher is doing a research
work on students’ reaction to the
newly implemented curriculum in
mathematics and interviewed every
10th student entering the gate of
the school
Systematic Random Sampling
A researcher who is studying the effects
of educational attainment on promotion
conducted a survey of 50 randomly
selected workers from each of these
categories: high school graduate , with
undergraduate degrees, with master’s
degree and doctoral degree.
Stratified Random Sampling
What sampling random should we use ?
Technology Implementation

Stratified Random Sampling

Internet Usage as Predictor

Systematic Random Sampling

Cluster Random Sampling

Financial Behavior and Money

School students in Mati National
High School.

STRATIFIED RANDOM SAMPLING

How many respondents should I

have?
You want to interview 375 students in your school to
determine their opinion on the new school uniform. How
are you going to choose your sample if there are 1,200
students in grade seven; 1,100 in Grade 8 ; 1050 in Grade
9 ; 940 in Grade 10 ; 900 in grade 11 , 810 in grade12?

Step 1 Identify the type of random sampling to be used

Step 2 Subdivide the population into several strata

Step 3 Compute the sample size each Grade level

Sample size each year level (Sample size ( n ) )

You want to interview 250 grade 7 students in your
school to determine their opinion on students bullying
from a population of 2000. List down the first five
sample units.
Step 1 Identify the type of random sampling to be used
Step 2 Find the sampling interval K . Divide the population
size by the sample size.

N ( Populationsize)
k
n( sample)
Step 3 Select a number from the whole numbers between 0 and
k + 1. This chosen value is called as the random start.
Step 4 Assume a randomly selected number.
Step 5 Make a sampling frame by assigning a number to each
member of the population .
Step 6 From your randomly selected number that will be your 1st
respondent then select every student by counting it
according to the number of interval .
C. Activity . Divide the class into 4 groups . Each group will be given a
sample problem to be solved by them.

RUBRIC FOR GROUP ACTIVITY

5 – The group has perfectly solved the problem involving random
sampling with correct process using stratified or systematic random
sampling .
4- The group has perfectly solved the problem involving random
sampling but with some minor errors in the process using stratified
random sampling or systematic random sampling.
3- The group has solved the problem involving random sampling but
has some major errors in the process.
2- The group has solved the problem involving random sampling but
yet failed to establish the correct process.
1- The group failed to solved the problem involving random sampling .
IV. Generalization
To generalize the lesson for the day, ask the following
questions:

A. In what particular subjects we can use the solving problem

involving random variable?

B. What is the importance of solving problem involving

rndom sampling?
V. Assessment
Directions: Solve the following problem involving
Random Sampling .

1. Using systematic sampling , list down the first five

sample units when selcting 300 sample elements from
population of 1500 with 4 as the random start.

2. In a given population ,there are 1500 high income

families , 2500 middle income families ,and 400 low
income families .If a sample of 500 families is needed
in the study, how many families should be coming
from each income catgory?
VI. Assignment
 An accountant always audits the second
account and every fourth account thereafter
when sampling client's account.
 a. Does the accountant use systematic
sampling? Explain

 b. Explain the problems that may be

encountered when this sampling scheme is
used.
