 There is a relationship that exists among distance, time,
and speed.
 Formulas can be derived from the
triangle in Figure 1. In the figure, d =
distance, s = average speed, and t =

Speed, Distance, and Time Formula
Speed, Distance, and Time Formula

 The relationship between speed, distance,

and time can be expressed in the following:
Speed =
Distance =
Time =
To further understand the relationship between these three terms (speed,
distance, and time) in the formula, analyze the situation below.

When we say a track event at the Palarong Pambansa is 500 m

long, we are defining its distance. Yet most people are interested in
the time taken to run it.
Equally, however, we could consider them to run a longer
distance in the same time. Both points of view are exactly the
same. All that are talking about is their average speed, which
defined by:
Definition of Average Speed
 Average Speed is a measure of the distance traveled in a given period of time; it
is sometimes referred to as the ratio of distance and time.
Average Speed = Distance
time
Why is the term average speed used?
Why is the term average speed used?

 Think about how the race happens they start from

being at rest, speed up, and run at almost the same
speed throughout.
 In everyday life, we use speeds like kilometers per
hour (km/h), whereas in this race we use meter per
second (m/s).
Definition of Speed
 Speed is defined as the distance covered per unit time.
 Speed also requires a unit of measurement. If the distance is
in kilometers and the time is in hours, then the unit of
measurement of speed is km per hour or km/hr.
 Similarly, if the length is in meters and the time is in
minutes, then the unit of measurement of speed is meter/per
minute or m/min or if the length is in meter per second or
m/sec.
Example 1

 Maria Anthonie traveled a distance

of 589 km by car in 10 hours. Find
the speed of the car.
Example 2

 Derek Emmanuel runs 350

m in 70 seconds, what is his
speed?
Definition of Distance
 Distance is the total length between two positions.
 When speed and time are given, the distance traveled is calculated
by using the formula:

Distance = Speed × Time or D = S x T

 The unit of time in speed should be the same as that of the given
time.
 The units of measurement of distance are km, m, cm, etc.
Example 1

 How much distance will be

covered in 6 hrs at a speed
of 39 km per hour?
Example 2

 A car travels at a speed of

58 km/hour. How far will it
travel in 45 minutes?
Definition of Time
 TIME is the quantity measured or measurable period during
which an action, process, or condition exists or continues.
 When distance and speed are given the time taken is
calculated by using the formula:
Time = Distance/Speed or D
S

The units of measurement of time are

hour (hr), minute (min), second (sec).
Example 1

 How much time will be taken

to cover a distance of 420 km
at a speed of 60 km per hour?
Example 2

 Paolo runs at the speed of 15

km per hour. How much time
will he take to cover 750
meters?
Solves problems involving
average rate and speed
 In word problems involving average rate and
speed it involves different strategies and steps to
solve them easily and to give correct and
reasonable answers. We need to read each
situation carefully to be able to comprehend and
decide the best techniques/solutions one may
engage in.
Definition of Average Speed

 Average speed is a measure of the

distance traveled in a given period of
time, it is sometimes referred to as the
ratio of distance and time.
Problem 1

 Mario drove for 4 hours at a rate of

60 miles per hour and for 3 hours at
70 miles per hour. What was his
average speed for the whole
journey?
Problem 2
 Leah has to travel a total of 476 kilometers. She
travels the first 224 kilometers in 4 hours.
 a. Calculate her average speed for the first part of
the journey.
 b. If her average speed remains the same,
calculate the total time for her to complete the
journey.
Problem 3

 Anthony travels from Pangasinan to Manila

at the rate of 60 miles per hour and comes
backs to the Pangasinan at the rate of 65
miles per hour. What is his average speed
for the whole journey?
Solutions

 Step 1 :
 Here, both the ways, he covers the same
distance.
 Then, the formula to find average speed is
= 2xy / (x+y)
Step 2 :
 x ----> Rate at which he travels from
Pangasinan to Manila
x = 60
 y ----> Rate at which he travels from Manila
to Pangasinan
y = 65
Step 3

 So, the average speed is

= (2 ⋅ 60 ⋅ 65) / (60 + 65)
Step 3

 So, the average speed is

= (2 ⋅ 60 ⋅ 65) / (60 + 65)
= 7800 / 125
Answer:

 So, the average speed for the

whole journey is 62 miles per
hour.
