Reading II

Making Inference
• FROM THE PICTURE
• FROM THE TEXT

By FADHILLAH
What is Inference?
A guess that is based on evidence found in clues from the pictures or text, as
well as using what you already know.we reach conclusions based on evidence
and reasoning.

Making inferences means choosing the most likely

explanation from the facts at hand.
1. Making inferences from the picture
What is an inference in a picture?
Students infer when they gather evidence from an image and add what they already know to figure
out what is happening in the picture. .

How do we infer ?
• Be a detective and find the clues
• Think what you already know
• Are there any characters in the pictures? How do they feel?
• What clues can you see in the picture? Weather ? Location ?
• What would the picture say if it was written in words?
Three steps of inference by the picture :
1. Look 3. infer
2. Think

A simple statement may help students focus their answer, such as:

“I see…” (describe what is happening in the picture)

“I think…or I infer” (describe what is happening based on clues in the picture)
Example
A simple statement may help students focus their answer, such as :

• “I see….” (describe what is happening in the picture)

• “I think…or I infer” (describe what is happening based on clues in the
picture)

Answer : “I see a boy walking with his dog. I infer that it rained because he
is wearing rain boots and wants to splash in the puddle.”
2.Making inferences from the text
• What is an inference in a text?
Readers who make inferences use the clues in the text along with their own experiences
to help them figure out what is not directly said, making the text personal and memorable.

steps of inference by the text :

1. Read /view the text
2. Take two or more details from the text (think)
3. Try to connect them and draw a reasonable conclusion (infer)
Example
1. Alifian’ face turned red and he started to yell, balling his hands up into
shaking fists.
Answer : we infer that he is furious about something, though we don’t yet
know what it is.
2. Hybrid cars are good for the environment, but they may not perform as well as cars that
run only on gasoline. The Toyota Prius gets great gas mileage and has low
emissions making it a good “green” option. However, many people think that it is
unattractive. The Prius also cannot accelerate as quickly as other models, and cannot
hold as many passengers as larger gas-fueled SUVs and vans. Compared to similar
gas-fueled options, hybrid cars also cost more money up front. A new hybrid car costs
almost $3,500 more than the same car configured to run just on gasoline.

Which of the following can you infer from the passage?

a.hybrid cars are more dangerous than other options

b.Toyota is making a lot of money from the Prius
c.cars that use gasoline are going to destroy the environment
d.hybrid cars may not be the best choice for everyone
Conclusion
An inference is an idea or consclusion that’s drawn from evidence and
reasoning. An inference is an educated guess. Inference is a way of reading
between the lines and coming to conclusions based on evidence and
information that you can observe
Sometimes the topic of a text may not be stated anywhere directly. You
must look for clues and try to guess what the passage about. This is called
making an inference.
