ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM
DAILY GOSPEL
Luke 11,5-13.

Jesus said to his disciples: "Suppose one of you has a friend to

whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three
loaves of bread,
for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey
and I have nothing to offer him,'
and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the door
has already been locked and my children and I are already in
bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’

I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because
of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he
needs because of his persistence.
And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will
find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks,
finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

What father among you would hand his son a snake when he
asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an
egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good
gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in
heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
LASALLIAN
PRAYER

Father in heaven, God of love, all I have and am is yours.

Grant that I may become a living sign of your compassion
in this world.
Grant me the faith to live my life,
always in the awareness of your loving presence.
Grant me zeal to serve without thought of reward,
those to whom you send me.
Grant me charity to bear the burdens of my brothers and
sisters.
Teach me to seek your Son’s face, in the last, the lost, and
the least.
In whatever I undertake, may I seek above all things, to
procure your glory,
as far as I able, and as you will require of me.
Strengthen me by your Holy Spirit, to follow Jesus by
living
the commitment I make this day.
Amen .
St. John Baptiste de la Salle, pray for us.

Live Jesus in our hearts forever!

INTRODUCTION

Periods and styles

complement one another.
The two elements
sometimes integrate
different ideas, at times,
create new approaches
and often re-envision and
re-invent old movements.
While dates are always
approximate, architecture
is a fluid changing art

As such, present-day
buildings have radically
evolved from medieval times.
In tracing the history of
architecture of the Western
world, we discover that many
significant buildings in the
modern era were inspired by
the majestic structures of the
Mediterranean Sea.

So let us explore the
evolution of architecture
made by humankind.
From the first known
structures to the soaring
skyscrapers of the present
day through a quick
review, illustrating how
each new movement
builds upon its
predecessor.

THE LAND BETWEEN
TWO RIVERS

Located between the mighty Tigris

and Euphrates Rivers, the
Mesopotamian area became home of
several empires such as the Akadian
and later Babylonian.
They worships many gods and built
temples, houses and using mudbrick.
Their architecture later influenced the
Egyptians.

MESOPOTAMI
AN
CIVILIZATION
Humans first settled in Mesopotamia in
the Paleolithic era. By 14,000 B.C., people
in the region lived in small settlements
with circular houses.
Five thousand years later, these houses
formed farming communities following
the domestication of animals and the
development of agriculture, most notably
irrigation techniques that took advantage
of the proximity of the Tigris and
Euphrates rivers.
Agricultural progress was the work of the
dominant Ubaid culture, which had
absorbed the Halaf culture before it.

These scattered agrarian communities started in the northern part of the ancient
Mesopotamian region and spread south, continuing to grow for several thousand years
until forming what modern humans would recognize as cities, which were considered
the work of the Sumer people.

SUMERIAN Uruk was the first of these cities, dating back to around 3200 B.C. It was a mud brick
metropolis built on the riches brought from trade and conquest and featured public
art, gigantic columns and temples. At its peak, it had a population of some 50,000
citizens.
Sumerians are also responsible for the earliest form of written language, cuneiform,
with which they kept detailed clerical records.

BABYLONIAN
Choosing Babylon as the capital,
the Amorites took control and
established Babylonia.
Kings were considered deities and
the most famous of these was
Hammurabi, who ruled 1792–
1750 B.C. Hammurabi worked to
expand the empire, and the
Babylonians were almost
continually at war.
Hammurabi’s most famous
contribution is his list of laws,
better known as the
Code of Hammurabi, devised
around 1772 B.C.
