WHAT IS
FLOATING
• Floating is when water uses an
upward force to keep objects at the
surface of water. The upward force
used in water is called upthrust. The
upthrust force of the water increases
with the volume of the object that is
under water; it is not affected by the
depth of the water.
• Aside is a picture of an object that is
floating.
FORCES ACTING ON
OBJECTS WHEN
THEY FLOAT

• An object floats when the two

forces, upthrust[buoyancy] and
gravity, act on them. Note that
when drawing a diagram about the
forces that act on objects which
float, the arrow that labels gravity
goes down and the arrow that
labels the force upthrust goes up.
• Below is a picture of the force
diagram.
HOW DO WE
KNOW
WHETHER
AN OBJECT
WILL FLOAT
• If the density of the
object is less than that
of water, it will float but
if the density of the
object more than that of
the water, it will sink.
HOW DOES THE SHAPE
OF AN OBJECT AFFECT
FLOATING

• The shape of an object affects

its ability to float.
• The larger the surface area of
an object, the more likely it
will be able to float, as an
object’s buoyancy increases
the more surface area it has.
SINKING
WHAT IS SINKING
• Sinking is when the weight
force down is larger than the
upthrust force. If the reverse
is true then the object will
rise-rising is the opposite of
sinking.
• Below is an object sinking.
FORCES ACTING ON
OBJECTS WHEN THEY SINK

• If the upthrust force is less

than then objects weight, the
object sinks. If the upthrust
force equals the object’s
weight, the object shall
remain suspended its present
depths.
• Below is picture about forces
acting on an object that is
sinking.
HOW DO WE
KNOW
WHETHER AN
OBJECT WILL
SINK

• If the density of
an object is
more than that
of the water it
will sink.
HOW DOES THE
SHAPE OF AN
OBJECT AFFECT
SINKING

• If changing the shape

of an object that sinks
increases its volume,
the object will displace
a greater volume of
water.
