LET'S TALK ABOUT

Ultraviolet Rays

PRESENTED BY: KHRYZIA VIRAY AND

ANNJANE DELOS REYES
Topics Covered:
1. What is Ultraviolet Rays?

2. Advantages and Disadvantages of Ultraviolet Rays.

3. Application and Uses of Ultraviolet Rays.

Ultraviolet Radiation
• Ultraviolet is a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelength from 10 nm to 400 nm,

shorter than that of visible light, but longer than X-rays

• Ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth's surface is made up of two types of rays, called

UVA and UVB.

• Ultraviolet waves are invisible radiation that lie beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum.

Ultraviolet light has a shorter wavelength than violet light and carries more energy. The sun is

our main source of ultraviolet light.

Characteristics and
Properties
• UV wavelengths are shorter than visible light
wavelengths.
• UV rays could be blocked by thick clouds.
• Throughout hospitals as well as laboratories,
UV lights are used to disinfect.
• UV waves are invisible to the human eye, some
insects, such as bumblebees, can see them.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
UV rays can be helpful for certain UVA rays are associated with deep
processes, as long as they are not damage to skin, causing wrinkles,
applied to our skin. Some fruit juices premature aging and potential skin
can be pasteurized by running UV cancers. UVB rays burn your skin up
rays over them. and hurt your eyes.
Application and Uses
• Ultraviolet rays can be used to kill microbes.
• Hospitals use UV lamps to sterilize surgical equipment and the
air in operating theatres.
• Food and drug companies also use UV lamps to sterilise their
products.
• UV radiation is widely used in industrial processes and in
medical and dental practices for a variety of purposes, such as
killing bacteria, creating fluorescent effects, curing inks and
resins, phototherapy and suntanning. Different UV
wavelengths and intensities are used for different purposes.
Did you know?
