Measure and Find the Perimeter
of Triangles, Squares,
Rectangles, Parallelograms and
Trapezoids
Objectives:
1. Measure the perimeter of any given
plane figure using appropriate tools.
2. Find the perimeter of triangles, squares,
rectangles, parallelograms and trapezoids.
Review
Identify the plane figure being
described.
1. I have three sides and three angles.
What am I?

___________
TRIANGLE
2. I am a polygon with four equal sides
and four right angles. What am I?

___________
SQUARE
3. I am a flat closed shape with four
straight sides with one pair of parallel
sides. What am I?

___________
TRAPEZOID
4. I have two long parallel sides and two
short parallel sides with four right
angles. What shape am I?

___________
RECTANGLE
5. I am a quadrilateral with two pairs of
opposite sides parallel, but have no
right angle. What am I?

___________
PARALLELOGRAM
“Measure what can be measured, and
make measurable what cannot be
measured.”

-Galileo Galilei
Reese wanted to put a lace on her
handkerchief. She wanted to find out
how much ribbon she would need.

What unit should Reese use to measure

the handkerchief?
What tool should she use?
A ruler is used to measure short
objects or distances, such as the length
of a desk.
A ruler can measure objects and
distances in millimeter, centimeter,
foot and inch.
A meter stick is a large ruler used for
measuring sizes or long distances using
the metric scale.
A meter stick measures objects and
distances in millimeter, decimeter,
centimeter and meter.
What tool and unit can Reese use to
measure the perimeter of her
handkerchief?

Is Reese measuring a short distance or

a long distance?
Reese is measuring a short distance.
She can measure the handkerchief in
inches using a ruler.
Activity 1
Choose the appropriate tool to use
[RULER or METER STICK] to get the
perimeter of the following. Put a check
on the correct tool.
1. A rectangular lot measures 12m long
and 10m wide.

METER

STICK
2. I want to know the perimeter of the
cellphone of my sister.

3. I have to put a fence on the square
garden in our backyard, but I don’t
know its perimeter.

METER

STICK
4. I have to know the perimeter of my
study table because I want to put plastic
cover on it.

METER

STICK
5. I want to know the exact
measurement of my feet because my
mom wants to buy me new shoes but I
am not allowed to go out.

Her handkerchief 8 in

measures 8 inches
long and 6 inches 6 in 6 in

wide.
8 in

How will she get the perimeter of her

handkerchief?
The word perimeter is derived from
the Greek word peri meaning around
and metron which means measure.
Perimeter is the total length of the
sides of a shape.
We often find the perimeter when
putting up a fence around a house,
finding the total length of the vegetable
garden or the distance covered when
you walk around a rectangular lot.
What is the measurement of the sides of
the handkerchief?
8 in

6 in 6 in

8 in

8in, 6in, 8in and 6in

What is the distance around the
handkerchief?
Perimeter = 8in + 6in + 8in + 6in
Perimeter = 28 inches
Reese needs 28 inches of ribbon to put
around her handkerchief.
Let us study how to get the perimeter
of the different plane figures using a
formula.
SQUARE
7cm
Formula:
P = 4 x s or s + s + s + s

P=4xs P=s+s+s+s
P = 4 x 7cm P = 7cm + 7cm + 7cm + 7cm
P = 28cm P = 28cm
RECTANGLE
5m
Formula:
10m
P = 2 [l + w] or 2l + 2w

P = 2 [10m + 5m]
P = 2 x 15m
P = 30m
TRIANGLE
Formula:
5in
10in P=a+b+c
8in
P = 5in + 10in + 8in
P = 23in
TRAPEZOID
8cm Formula:
7cm 7cm P=a+b+c+d
10cm
P = 8cm + 7cm + 10cm + 7cm
P = 32cm
PARALLELOGRAM
Formula:
5m P = 2 [b + h] or 2b + 2h
8m
P = 2 [8m + 5m]
P = 2 x 13m
P = 26m
Figure Perimeter Formula
square P = 4 x s or s + s + s + s
rectangle P = 2 [l + w] or 2l + 2w
triangle P=a+b+c
trapezoid P=a+b+c+d
parallelogram P = 2 [b + h] or 2b + 2h
Activity 2
Fill in the table with the missing
information.
Figure Perimeter Formula
square 1. _______________
2. _______________ P = 2 [l + w] or 2l + 2w
triangle 3. _______________
trapezoid 4. _______________
5. _______________ P = 2 [b + h] or 2b + 2h
Let’s Check
Figure Perimeter Formula
square P = 4 x s or s + s + s + s
rectangle P = 2 [l + w] or 2l + 2w
triangle P=a+b+c
trapezoid P=a+b+c+d
