What is a world war?

A world war is an international conflict that involves most or

all of the world's major powers. Conventionally, the term is
reserved for two major international conflicts that occurred
during the first half of the 20th century, World War I (1914–
1918), and World War II (1939–1945).
World War I (1914–1918)

World War I or the First World War (28 July 1914 – 11

November 1918) was a global conflict fought between two
coalitions: the Allies and the Central Powers. Fighting took
place throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific,
and parts of Asia. One of the deadliest wars in history, it
resulted in an estimated 9 million soldiers dead and 23 million
wounded, plus another 5 million civilian deaths from various
causes.
Why did the First World War start and who won?
• Increasing diplomatic tension between the European great
powers reached a breaking point on 28 June 1914, when a
Bosnian Serb named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke
Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne.
Austria-Hungary held Serbia responsible, and declared war
on 28 July.

• The first World War was won by the Allies consisting of the
United Kingdom, France, United States, Russia, Japan, Italy.
They defeated the Central Powers consisting of Imperial
Germany, Austro-Hungary Empire and the Ottoman Empire.
It lasted from 1914 and lasted until the signing of the
Versailles Peace Treaty in 1919.

World War II (1939–1945)

World War II or the Second World War was a global conflict

that lasted from 1939 to 1945. The vast majority of the world's
countries, including all the great powers, fought as part of two
opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. Many
participating countries invested all available economic,
industrial, and scientific capabilities into this total war, blurring
the distinction between civilian and military resources. Aircraft
played a major role, enabling the strategic bombing of
population centres and delivery of the only two nuclear
weapons ever used in war. It was by far the deadliest conflict in
history, resulting in 70–85 million fatalities. Millions died due
to genocides, including the Holocaust, as well as starvation,
massacres, and disease. In the wake of Axis defeat, Germany,
Austria, and Japan were occupied, and war crime tribunals were
conducted against German and Japanese leaders.
Why did the Second World War start and who won?
• The Invasion of Poland, also known as the September
Campaign, Polish Campaign, War of Poland of 1939, and
Polish Defensive War of 1939 (1 September – 6 October
1939), was a joint attack on the Republic of Poland by Nazi
Germany, the Slovak Republic, and the Soviet Union; which
marked the beginning of World War II.

• British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “The

only thing worse than having allies is not having them.” In
The Invasion of Poland
World War II, the three great Allied powers—Great Britain,
the United States, and the Soviet Union—formed a Grand
Alliance that was the key to victory.

• For the first time in human history, nuclear weapons were

used. When the United States of America dropped nuclear
bombs on the cities of Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
