History
Ha Long Bay is a product of a lengthy geological
process that involved various factors. The most
significant factor was the formation of a limestone
layer that was more than 1000m thick during the
Mesozoic Era, specifically the Bon-Permian period,
which occurred around 340-240 million years ago.
Additionally, the Ha Long basin came into being
during the Neogene period, which was about 26-10
million years ago.

Legend of HLB
● Ha Long Bay has a rich history in Vietnamese
folklore. Legend has it that when foreign invaders
threatened Vietnam, the Jade Emperor sent Mother
Dragon to bring Baby Dragons to help fight. As the
Dragons arrived, they spewed fire to burn the
enemy's boats, while a magical creature created a
stone wall to block the invaders. This tale has been
passed down through generations.
Legend of HLB
After defeating the enemy, the Mother Dragon and
Child Dragon were amazed by the peaceful land,
abundant greenery and the hardworking and
cooperative people. They decided to stay on earth
and protect the Dai Viet people forever. The Mother
Dragon landed in Ha Long, the Baby Dragon landed
in Bai Tu Long and the tails of the dragons created
white water at Bach Long Vi. However, it is
important to note that the names Ha Long or Bai Tu
Long only came into use during the French colonial
period.
03-Ecology
● According to researchers from the Institute of Ecology
and Biological Resources, Ha Long Bay Tourist Area can
be categorized into two primary ecosystems: the tropical
humid evergreen forest ecosystem and the marine and
coastal ecosystems.
● In the tropical humid evergreen forest ecosystem,
scientists have identified 507 species and 351 genera of
higher plants belonging to 110 families on the islands of
Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long, and Cat Ba. This includes
486 species of magnolias, 17 species of ferns, and 20
species of mangrove plants. In terms of animals, there are
66 species of amphibians and reptiles, 77 species of birds,
and 22 species of mammals.
● In Ha Long, the tropical and humid evergreen forest
ecosystem is known for its various forest types on
limestone mountains. These types include seasonal humid
forests on rocky mountains, shrubs on dry rocky floors,
mangrove forests, and plants in mountain caves.
● As for the marine and coastal ecosystems, which
encompass wetland and marine ecosystems, researchers
have identified a total of 571 benthic species, 419
plankton species, 181 coral species, 156 fish species, 139
seaweed species, 5 seagrass species, and 19 mangrove
plant species in Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long, and Cat Ba.
