SUBJECT AND VERB AGREEMENT

 A verb should agree in number with its subject.


 A subject and verb agree when they have the same
number.
Ex.
 Kirby runs.
 The learners are singing.
 Majine spends his free time listening to music.
 Kian and Karl play the guitar.
 Justine rides his bike to work every day.
When the sentence contains a verb phrase,
the first helping verb in the phrase agrees
with the subject.
 Ms.Chris has been waiting to talk to you about
the test results.
 You have taken the wrong decision.
 Cheska Ortiz has written around 38 articles.
 Doctors have a rough time, dealing with
illnesses all the time.

Problems in Agreement
Phrases Between Subject and Verb
The number of a subject is not changed by a phrase following the subject.
Ex.
 My friend, with his parents, is flying in today to visit me and my family.
 Neither my mother nor my sisters are coming to visit me this summer.
 The learners, as well as the committee members has excited for the PSAP ALAM.
 Interviews are one way to collect data and allow researchers to gain an in-depth
understanding of participants.
If the subject is the indefinite pronoun, its number
may be determined by the object of a prepositional
phrase that follows it.
 None of the pizza was eaten.
None are available pastas for several months.
 Some has been finished to drink the milk already.
Some of the peoples do anything for attention.
 More children's are swimming in the lake.
More is necessary in this document.
Compound Prepositions
Phrases beginning with compound prepositions do
not affect the number of a subject or verb.
 The ambulance is parked in front of the city
hospital.
 I found her name on the top of the letter.
 They walked into the garden together.
 The Escuela De San Dionisio is open as of today.
 Jude was never close to his parents.
Personal Pronouns refer to the specific people,
places, thing, or ideas.
Ex.
He, she, we, it, they, them, us, you, him, her
A pronoun that does not refer to a definite person,
place, thing, or idea is called an Indefinite pronoun.

Ex.
Anybody, everybody, anyone, everyone, most, all,
another, few, nobody, no one, each, none, several,
Example of Indefinite Pronouns in Sentences
 Anything is possible if you believe in yourself.
 Nobody knows what the future holds.
 Everybody needs somebody to love.
 Anybody can learn a new skill.
 Did you go anywhere yesterday?
 One must show honor to one’s parents.
 Would you like something to drink?
