COMPUTER DATA THREATS

AND SECURITY
Ms. Emamdee
WHAT IS MALWARE

Malware (short for “malicious software”) is software intended to

access a device without the user’s knowledge and damage or disrupt
the infected system.
Types of malware:
Spyware
Adware
Viruses
Trojan horses
Worms
Rootkits
Browser Hijackers
SPYWARE

Collects information about your surfing habits,

browsing history, or personal information (such
as credit card numbers), and often uses the
Internet to pass this information along to third
parties without you knowing.
ADWARE

Adware is a type of free software supported by

advertisements that show up in pop-ups
windows or on a toolbar on your computer or
browser. Most adware are annoying, but safe.
But some are used to gather your personal
information, track the websites you visit or
even record your keystrokes.
VIRUSES

A program or piece of code that is loaded onto

your computer without your knowledge or
permission. Some viruses are merely annoying,
but most viruses are destructive and designed to
infect and gain control over vulnerable systems.
A virus can spread across computers and
networks by making copies of itself, just like a
biological virus passes from person to person.
TROJANS

A Trojan Horse is a type of virus that pretends

to be something useful, helpful or fun while
actually causing harm or stealing data.
WORMS

Worms are self-replicating programs that

spread through networks of machines. Because
worms consume a large amount of system
memory or network bandwidth, servers,
network servers and individual computers often
stop responding.
ROOTKITS

A rootkit is a program designed to provide

hackers with administrative access to your
computer without you knowing. Rootkits are
installed with different types of products and
used remotely to control a device.
BROWSER HIJACKER

A browser hijacker is a malware program that

alters your computer’s browser settings and
redirects you to websites that you had no
intention of visiting.
WHERE MALWARE COMES FROM

Malware most commonly gets access to your

device through the Internet and via email,
though it can also get access through hacked
websites, game demos, music files, toolbars,
software, free subscriptions, or anything else
you download from the Web.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE MALWARE

A slow computer is often a sign that your

device may be infected with malware, as are
pop-ups, spam, and frequent crashes.
HOW TO REMOVE MALWARE

The best way to get rid of malware is to use a

reliable malware removal tool, as found in
good anti virus software
PROTECTION AGAINST MALWARE

The standard protection from malware is anti-

malware – software tools and programs
designed to identify, remove and prevent
malicious software from infecting computer
systems or electronic devices. Anti-malware
tools can also include malware removal
capabilities.
