Qualitative and Quantitative Data

Qualitative and Quantitative Data

Quantitative data is anything that can be

counted or measured; it refers to numerical
data.

Qualitative data is descriptive, referring to

things that can be observed but not measured
—such as colors or emotions.
Qualitative and Quantitative Data

Qualitative data Quantitative data

• descriptive, relating to words and • countable or measurable, relating to
language numbers
• describe certain attributes, and help us • tell us how many, how much and how
to understand the “why” and “how” often
behind certain behaviors • fixed and universal, “factual”
• dynamoc and subjective, open to • gathered by countong and measuring
interpretation things
• gathered through observation and • analyzed using statistical analysis
interviews
• analyzed by grouping the data into
meaningful themes and catergories

• Numerical data -
two types

• Discrete
• Continuous
Quantitative

• Discrete

• Data that only takes certain values.

• this is data that can be counted and

has a finite number of values.
Quantitative

• Discrete
examples:

• The number of employees in CST-R

• The number of students in your section

• The number of products currently held in

inventory
Quantitative

• continuous

• Refers to data that can be measured.

• This data has values that are not fixed
and have an infinite number of possible
values.
Quantitative

• continuous
examples:

• The height or weight of a person

• The daily temperature in your city

• The amount of time needed to complete

Open-ended questions are free-form
survey questions that allow respondents
to answer in open-text format to answer
based on their complete knowledge,
feeling, and understanding. The response
to this question is not limited to a set of
options.

Close-ended questions are questions that
have predetermined answers for
respondents to choose from. In some cases,
close-ended questions can be answered by
a simple one-word answer – e.g., yes/no, or
true/false. Other types offer a set of
multiple-choice answers.
