Before we proceed with our lesson today, let me remind you of our classroom rules.

Always remember the word FOLLOW!

F - Focus on the teacher and the lesson.

O - Observe silence when others are speaking.

L - Listen actively and participate in discussions.

L - Limit distractions like phones and unrelated materials.

O - Organize your materials and keep your area tidy.

W - Wait for your turn to speak or ask questions.

EXPLORING

VOLCANO
ES
Volcanoes are majestic natural wonders that captivate our
imagination and shape the landscapes around us. In this
presentation, we will learn about:

a. describe volcano;

• b. differentiate active and inactive
volcanoes;

• c. explain what happens when volcanoes
erupt; and

• d. recognize the types of volcanic
Since you were in elementary, you heard about volcanoes.
But do you know what is volcano is? To find out, let’s do the
following activity.
ACTIVITY 1: FILL ME!
INSTRUCTION:
You need to observe the picture of Mayon Volcano. After, all
you need to do is give five descriptions of a volcano based on the
picture using a
concept map.
Figure 1: Mayon Volcano
Figure 2: Concept map of Volcano
Volcanoes are openings in the Earth's crust through which molten rock,
gas, and other materials are released from deep within the Earth.

A volcano is a mountain or hill, typically

conical, that is formed through the
accumulation of materials erupted
through one or more openings in the
Earth’s crust. Volcanoes can be active,
dormant, or extinct, and they are often
associated with tectonic plate
boundaries. When they erupt, they can

CONDUIT: LAVA:

SILL:

Flat rock formation that forms when

molten magma cools and solidifies in
a crack or fissure.
Guide Questions:

• Are you familiar with the

Two classifications of
volcanoes?
TWO CLASSIFICATIONS OF
VOLCANO
• ACTIVE
• INACTIVE
ACTIVE VOLCANO
Active volcanoes are those that have a record
of eruption within the last 600 years or those
that erupted 10,000 years based on analysis of
their materials.
INACTIVE VOLCANO
Inactive volcanoes, we are referring to those
that have not erupted for the last 10,000
years, and their physical form is being
changed by agents of weathering and erosion
through the formation of deep and long
gullies.
FACTS
According to Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and Seismology of the
PHIVOLCS class, our country has more than
100 volcanoes as of 2013.
TYPES OF

VOLCANOE
S
DESCRIPTION:

Broad, gently sloping volcanoes with a shape resembling a

warrior's shield. They are formed from layers of cooled lava.

ERUPTION
STYLE:
Generally characterized by non-explosive, effusive eruptions
with the outpouring of lava flows.

EXAMPLES:

Mauna Loa in Hawaii, Mount Etna in Italy

SHIELD VOLCANO
DESCRIPTION:

Steep-sided, conical volcanoes formed by explosive

eruptions of ash, cinders, and dust.

ERUPTION
STYLE:
Explosive eruptions that eject fragments of lava and
volcanic ash into the air.

EXAMPLES:

Paricutin in Mexico, Sunset Crater in CINDER CONE VOLCANO

Arizona
DESCRIPTION:

Tall and symmetrical volcanoes composed of

layers of lava flows and volcanic ash.

ERUPTION
STYLE:
Can have both explosive eruptions and
effusive eruptions.

EXAMPLES:

Mount Fuji in Japan, and Mount St.

Helens in the United States

COMPOSITE CONE
VOLCANO
TYPES OF

VOLCANO
ERUPTION
S
PHREATIC OR HYDROTHERMAL

DESCRIPTION:

It is stream-driven
eruption as the hot rocks
come into contact with
water. It is short-lived,
characterized by ash
columns, but may be the
onset of a larger eruption.
PHREATOGMAGNETIC

DESCRIPTION:

A violent eruption due to

the contact between water
and magma. As a result a
large column of a very
fine ash and high-speed
and sideway emission or
pyroclastic call base
STROMBOLIAN
ERUPTION
DESCRIPTION:

It is a periodic with
violent eruption
characterized by fountain
lava.
VULCANIAN ERUPTION
DESCRIPTION:

It is characterized by tall
eruption columns that reach up
to 20 km high with pyroclastic
flow and ashfall tephra.
PLINIAN ERUPTION
DESCRIPTION:

It is a gas and pyroclastic

eruption that is extremely
explosive.
MATERIALS FROM

VOLCANO
ERUPTION
S
LAVA
Molten rock that flows from a volcano during an eruption.

PYROCLASTIC MATERIAL:
Fragments of lava, ash, and rock ejected into the air during explosive
eruptions.
VOLCANIC ASH:

Fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock that can be carried by wind over
long distances.
VOLCANIC GASES:
Gases, including water vapor, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and others,
released during eruptions.
NEXT
ACTIVITY
ACTIVITY 2: WHO AM I?
INSTRUCTION:
I will play a short video about our topic and all you need to do is watch and understand.

And after that I will be dividing your class into two groups. All you need to do is guess what is being defined in
column A by matching the picture in column B.
