Question 1: If you are going to attend the prom
night and you have three different pants and three
different tops on hand, how many ways can you
match the outfits?
Counting
Techniques
Tree diagram
- is a diagram that is used to give a visual representation of the
probabilities as well as the outcomes of an event.
From the illustration, we can see that there are nine
different ways of matching the pants and the tops.
Systematic listing
- way of writing outcomes from an event in an organized way
with none of the possibilities missed out or repeated.

P1T2 P2T2 P3T2
P1T3 P2T3 P3T3
Tabular method
- In the tabular form, you get a systematic arrangement of rows
and columns.

FUNDAMENTAL COUNTING PRINCIPLE
- states that if one event has 𝑚 possible outcomes and a second
independent event has 𝑛 possible outcomes, then there are 𝑚
∙ 𝑛 total possible outcomes for the two events to occur together.
GIVEN: 3 PANTS AND 3 TOPS

3 ∙ 3 =9 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑓𝑖𝑡𝑠
Reviewing the
Fundamental Principle
of Counting
Problem 1: How
many outcomes
in tossing a coin
twice?
Table of Values:
Second Toss
Head (H) Tail (T)
First Toss
Head (H) HH HT
Tail (T) TH TT

There are four outcomes in tossing a coin twice.

Problem 2: A student
is choosing between
Science (S) or Math
(M) as a course of
study and intend to
enroll in at CSU, SPUP,
or USLT. How many
ways can a course and
a school be chosen?
Tree Diagram:
Course School Outcome

CSU S, CSU
S SPUP S, SPUP
USLT S, USLT

CSU M, CSU
M SPUP M, SPUP
USLT M, USLT
There are six ways in choosing a course and a school.
Problem 3: How
many three-digit
even numbers
can be formed
using the digits
0, 1, 2, 3?
Systematic Listing

100, 102, 110, 112, 120, 122, 130, 132,

200, 202, 210, 212, 220, 222, 230, 232,
300, 302, 310, 312, 320, 322, 330, 332

There are 24 possible even numbers be formed using the

digits 0, 1, 2, 3.
For Problems 1-3, observe that:
a. The events are independent events – they
do not affect each other’s outcome.
b.The number of ways that these events can
occur is simply the product of the number
of outcomes of each event.
Fundamental Principle of Counting
If one event can occur in m ways, and
another event can occur in n ways, then these
events can occur in mn ways, provided that
these two events are independent events.
Determine the number of all possible outcomes in
each of the following events.
1. two different coins are tossed
2 ∙ 2= 4 possible outcomes

2. three different coins are tossed

2 ∙ 2∙ 2= 8 possible outcomes
Determine the number of all possible outcomes in
each of the following events.
3. a coin is tossed, and a die is rolled
2 ∙ 6 =12 possible outcomes

4. 2 different dice are rolled

6 ∙ 6 =36 possible outcomes
