Rhetoric practice

In today’s lesson:
- You will be given a scenario, a rhetorical device and a
challenging word;
- You have 1 minutes to create a sentence about the
scenario given;
- You will get a 1 point for your sentence, another point for
using the device, another point for using the challenge
word.
- If you can come up with extra sentences, extra devices, or
other challenging words you will get bonus points.
Speech topic: On arranged
marriages e.g. Juliet not being
able to marry who she wants
Device: Rhetorical question- a question that
doesn’t require an answer.

Challenge vocabulary (+1 point for using the word


correctly):
Misogynistic- strongly prejudiced against women.
Breaking news: On the impact of civil
wars on other people e.g. the fighting
and is effect on Verona.
Device: Direct address- where you talk directly to
the reader/audience.

Delusional- having a faulty view/being mistaken.
Speech topic: On how people rely
on others to make them happy e.g.
Romeo’s hopeless love of Rosaline
Device: Repetition- where you repeat a word or
phrase.

Unrequited- not returned or rewarded.
Speech topic: On parental control
e.g. Capulet’s control over his
daughter
Device: Hyperbole- an exaggeration.

Tyrant- an evil ruler
Speech topic: On the importance of
friendship to overcome difficulties
(e.g. like Romeo and Benvolio)

Device: Emotive language- language that creates an


emotional effect.

Savior- people who rescue people/things.
Speech topic: On how some people
think that violence is the solution to
problems e.g. the families’ feud
Device: Rule of three- a list of three
ideas/adjectives that describe something.
