North from the South

PRAYER :
Dear heavenly Father, I know that you are here with me; I feel
your presence.
Reveal to me once more as you have done in the beginning
Your splendor and majesty, open my eyes and heart, O Lord
to see your greatness. Free us and deliver us, make us
change, make us see your miracles, and transform us. Show us
your glory, O Lord, and may our life glorify You, Our Savior was
resurrected.
Amen.
POLITICAL
• To fully understand what separates the
North and the South would involve not only
a clash of political ideologies but also
economic and societal concepts.
• The great divide between the United
States and Mexico can be traced as far
back as the 19th century when Texas won
its independence from Mexico.
-Over the years, as the United States tightened its hold
over its borders, one of the pivotal conflicts between the
North and the South has been the issue of immigration.

-With the immigrants coming from the South, the United

States faced resulting concerns such as employment,
access to resources, and the possible increase in crime
rate.
-The biggest challenge that plagues the relationship between
these two continents is the ever-increasing problem of drugs.
-With the influx of immigrants, both legal and illegal it beca,e
very difficult to, monitor the movement of drugs in between
territories. (Murphy,2008).
-To maintain and fortify its political integrity, the US asserts its
interest among its close neighbors like Mexico and the
Caribbean States.
• The tension between the North and South on
the political front became aggravated in the
past decades with South American nations
accusing the United States of meddling with
their local political affairs.
• One of the most notable political conflicts
between the North and the South is the case
of Nicaragua and the United States.
-Nicaragua claims that the US secretly supports the anti-
government rebels - the Contras, in their fight against
the incumbent Nicaraguan Government.
-The International Court of Justice held such an
intervention is a violation of International law and ruled
in favor of Nicaragua (Fisher, 2012).
ECONOMIC
• The disparity in access to international trade
led to uneven economic growth among the
North and South American nations.
• The US, with its access to both the Pacific
and the Atlantic Ocean, was able to
capitalize on the International trade coming
from Europe and Africa from the Atlantic side
and Asia from the Pacific side.
• By the 21st century, The US has become an
economic power, both as one of the largest
producers of commodities as well as one of the
largest consumers of global products.
• Although South America has access to the same
oceans, its political subdivisions made it difficult
for Latin American countries to exploit the trade
possibilities.
• Unlike the case of the US which occupied a land
mass that goes from the Pacific to the Atlantic
which are located in such a way that no country has
access to both oceans.

-The only exemption is the country of Colombia, but with

its geographical features and political instability, it was
not able to capitalize on its location.
• One of the biggest constraints in the free flow of
trade from one coast to another in South America is
the terrain itself.
-The territorial subdivisions of the South American countries are
commonly marked by prominent geographical features such as rivers
and mountain ranges.
-The Andes and the Amazon - Because of these natural barriers, trade
from the country proved to be a challenge amongst the South
American Nations (Friedman,2017).
CULTURAL
• The cultures among North and South American countries are as
varied as there are territorial boundaries. Each country nurtured
its own particular set of cultures so it is difficult to establish a
generalizing concept of how to best describe the North or South
American Culture.
• Excluding the influence of ancient indigenous people, each
country greatly differs from one another in terms of cultural
orientation. One of the most significant reasons for such
diversity is the difference in the countries that colonized them.
BELOWARE THE COUNTRIESAND THE
COUNTRIES THAT COLONIZED/INFLUENCED
THEM:
Countries Colonizer/s

Canada French colony

Eastern United States England colony

Mexico Spanish empire colony Western United States

South America territories Influence by few countries

Brazil Portuguese rule colony

Southwest American; Argentina, Chile, and Peru Spain colony

The Countries in both North and South
America still carried with them the general
customs and traditions of their former rulers.
Adding the influence of the indigenous
community within the boundaries, the result
was an array of culture as varied as the
people themselves.
LOCATING THE GLOBAL
SOUTH
• The disparity in the economic capability
between the North and South American
countries was apparent amongst
experts and academicians in the field of
economics.
• Indeed, another challenge to
globalization is the wide gap between
the rich and poor countries.
(economically rich countries from the
less than economically capable
counterparts).
• The rich nations or the “developed
nations” are mainly located in the
northern hemisphere such as the
United States, Canada, Germany,
and Japan.

-These countries have well-organized

agricultural and industrial systems, effective
educational systems, and advanced
technology.
• Those in the South mainly depend
on the agricultural economy.
-Countries in the south are suffering from
multiple issues such as food shortages and
poor educational systems due to explosive
population growth.
• While it is true that the agricultural
industry can provide a significant
income, such benefit is not shared
by all residents of the South.
• In cases, wealthy
landowners tend to
dominate the agricultural
industry resulting in a large
gap of economic wealth
between the rich residents
and the poor.
• Some scholars and
economists coined the term
Global South.
-The meaning however may vary from
author to author, but the growing
consensus is that it pertains to
countries that are economically
challenged.

-A more acceptable term than “Third

World” or “Developing World”.

-An effort to integrate with other

nations belonging to the group.
-It was observed that the ones who
use the term as such are those
from the more developed countries
of the Global South who would like
to benefit from the South-South
trades while some care less about
how the world refers to them.
-The determination is not much of
a geographical subdivision but
rather economic and to some
extent, political. (Wolvers,n.d.).
-The Idea of a global South or
Global North reflects much
deeper peculiarity considering
the forces economic, and
political forces of globalization at
play.
