What a plant needs to SURVIVE

For a plant to survive it needs:

➔ Sunlight
➔ Water
➔ Nutrients
➔ Air
➔ Sustainable temperature
01
Plants
Oranga taiao,
oranga tangata
Humanity is sustained by nature.
Why are plants so important for humanity? Plants are
important for humanity because provide us with food,
they get all the Co2 (Carbon dioxide) created by
animal, cars, volcanoes etc and they release oxygen.
Classification
What kind of seed has your teacher provided you?
● Mung bean

Kingdom: Plantae
Phylum: Vascular plant
Class: Dicotyledons
Order: Fabales
Family: Legumes/Fabaceae
Genus: Vigna
Species: Vigna radiata

Germination
Seed Structure
Draw a diagram of a seed and label the following parts of a seed: testa (seed coat), plumule, radicale,
cotyledon, micropyle.
Seed Dissection - Lima bean
Germination
Warmth
They need it because since nearly all
Water chemical reactions in living
They need it because the chemical organisms require enzymes(it helps
reaction(metabolism) that makes chemical reaction o happen), the
seed germinate can only take place temperature cant beto hot (causing
in solution(in a liquid), which is the enzymes to be destroyed) or to
what allows particle to move cold (causing the molecules to move
slowly). It has to be just right.
Oxygen
They need it because for the sed to
develop they need energy which is
released by respiration

Watch this video and complete the slide to outline the requirements
of germination and explain why they are needed
Germinating your seed
Write a step-by-step method of how you germinated your seed. Include photos of the process.

1. First i got a small pot and 2 cotton disks

2. I wetted the cotton disks, i put the seed between them in the pot
3. I frequently checked to make sure that the cotton disks were wet

8 days, the length is 45mm but more leaves bigger one, the length is
now 43mm started developing 54mm

Graphing your plant growth
Plot the growth on your plant’s growth for (at least) 2 weeks.

Do a CUTLASS graph on paper and upload a photo of it here.

Life
Processes
MRS C GREN
What are the life processes that help keep a plant alive?
Nutrition
We get our nutrition from food(). Plants get nutrition by photosynthesis

Water + CO2 (Carbon dioxide) → O2 (Oxygen) + Glucose (Sugar)

To for t
Xylem & Phloem
Describe the function of xylem and phloem in a plant.

Explain how xylem and phloem are helping to keep your plant alive.
Photosynthesis and Respiration
Write down the word equations for photosynthesis and respiration..

● Photosynthesis
○ Water + CO2 (Carbon dioxide) → O2 (Oxygen) + Glucose (Sugar)
● Respiration
○ O2 (Oxygen) + Glucose (Sugar) → Water + CO2 (Carbon dioxide) + Energy

Explain how photosynthesis and respiration are connected (use the diagram to help you)

Your Flower
If your plant manages to flower - WELL DONE!

Take a photo of your flower and identify any features of the flower that could attract pollinators.
