i-words

1. i -> i (page 140 / 192 )

• When a word ends with i, you need to remember what group it belongs to: you can´t see
it. There are 4 possible groups.

1) i -> i. The largest i-word group

• I in the end of the basic form doesn´t change in stem
• These words are mostly loan words
• Partitiivi = perusmuoto + a/ä
1. Nominative: pankki
2. Partitive: pankkia
3. Stem: panki-
• I -> i words: koti, kaupunki, pankki, kahvi
• Kpt change is possible

2) i -> e
• I in the end of the basic form is e in stem.
1. Nominative: nimi
2. Partitive: nimeä
3. Stem: nime-
• i -> e words: Suomi, onni, talvi, järvi, ovi, lehti
• Strong stem in partitive + e (joki -> joe-n, jokea =river).
• Kpt-change is possible.
3. i -> e (page 141 / 193)
3) i -> e
• i in the end of the basic form is e in the stem
1. Nominative: suuri
2. Partitive: suur-ta
3. Stem: suure-
• Consonant stem in partitive, no e letter (kieltä, nuorta)
• i -> e words: kieli, meri, pieni, nuori, tuli
• There are exceptions: lapsi - las-ta, lumi - lun-ta
• Ei kpt-vaihtelua / No kpt-change

• Exceptional changes in consonants:
1. Nominative: uusi
2. Partitive: uut-ta
3. Stem: uude-

• nen in the basic form = se in stem
• Consonant stem in partitive form. No e in partitive form.

1. Nominative: punainen, nainen

2. Partitive: punaista, naista
3. Stem: punaise-, naise-
• nen words: nainen, punainen, suomalainen
• No kpt-change
