ECONOMIC

GEOGRAPHY
NATURE,SCOPE,APPROACHES
“THE ECONOMY” refers to the INTERRELATED
PROCESSESS of PRODUCTION ,CIRCULTION,EXCHANGE
and CONSUMPTION through wich wealth is generated (Hudson
2005)
is through such processes that people strive to meet their
needs, earning a living in the form of wages profits or rent
Involves combining land (including resources),
capital, labour and knowledge- commonly know as the
factor of production-to make or provide particular
it relies on a supply of resources from
nature, meaning that economic activities have a direct
impact on the environment
The COMMUNITY,is defined as any product or service that is sold commercially,
Is so basic to the working of the economy that karl marx described it as the
economic cell form of capitalism
The MODERN ECONOMY involves the production and consumption of
Vast array of commodities, spanning everything from smart phones to pakages
holiday
Human societies have tended to organize and structure their economic activities
through overarching modes of production these can be defined as economic and
social systems which determine how resources are deployed, how work I organized
and how wealth is distributed
Example . capitalism is clearly the dominant mode of production in the world
today, operating at an increasingly global scale.

PRIVATE OWNERSHIP OF THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION –

factories, offices, equipment and money capital and the associated need for most
people to sell their labour power to employers in oeder to earn wage

Compared to earlier modes of production ,production and consumption are often

geographically separate under capitalism ,creating a need for extensive transport
and distribution networks.
There by continuously creating and re-creating distinct spatial patterns across the
globe and here comes geography with it
THREE KEY THEMES-
emerges from this :
1.THE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION AND LOCATION OF
ECOIMIC PHENOMENA:
2.TO EXPLAIN AND UNDERSTAND THESE SPATIAL
DISTRIBUTION AND PATTERNS OF ECONOMIC ACTIVTY
3. THE ENGAGEMENT WITH POLICY MAKERS IN
GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATES SECTOR
APPROACHES TO ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY
Since human geographers began to take question of theory, philosophy and method in the
1960s anglophone economic geography (globaly by far the most influential cluster of
ideas )
Has experimented withn at least five influential approaches, each with distinct
perspective on the question of geographically unequal livelihood possibilities.
1.Location theory (CPT and loschian model)
2.Political economy (Marxist approach-Harvey)
3.The cultural turn two aspects of geography are seen as important;place and network.
4.Feminist approaches(other makers were also vital in shaping geographical livelihood
Possibilities;gender,race,age,ableness,sexually and location
5. geographical economics.
AN ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY PERSPECTIVE(NATURE)
economic geography is concerned with concrete question
about:
1.the location and distribution of economic activity
2.The role of uneven geographical development and
3. Processess of local and regional economic development
SCOPE OF ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY
Economic geography can be divided into four major sub-fields such as:
1.Agriculture geography
2.Industrial geography
3.Transport geography
4.Development geography
