Diagnose the Problem
• We have identified specific components and equipment are not
working and are old. Ex. LEDs, Resistors, Base Units, oscilloscope.
• Determine the impact of the broken equipments on laboratory
activities and overall functionality.
• The potential causes that we have investigated is shortage of
resources, such as budget constraints or procurement issues.
Analyze Environment
• The current state of the equipment room is that there are lots of
outdated hardware equipment and aging equipment, hindering
efficiency and data accuracy.
• The lack of experts to repair these broken equipments.
• Limited physical space in the equipment room may hinder the storage
and organization of necessary laboratory components.
Articulate Problem or Opportunity:
• The equipment room is currently facing a critical issue with damaged
and outdated hardware equipment, negatively impacting the
efficiency and functionality of laboratory operations.
• The obsolete nature of the hardware or equipment poses a significant
effect to the quality of knowledge and experience that may possibly
gain by the ECE students in their laboratory activities.
Develop viable alternatives
• Alternative #1: Complete Equipment Upgrade
• Alternative #1: Partial Laboratory Equipment Replacement:
• Alternative #3: Equipment Maintenance and Refurbishment Program:
Evaluate Alternatives
• Alternative #1
• Complete Laboratory Equipment Upgrade:
• Replace all damaged and outdated hardware with new, state-of-the-
art equipment.
• Advantages: Ensures the entire laboratory is equipped with modern
and reliable technology, reducing downtime and enhancing research
capabilities.
• Considerations: High initial cost; potential need for staff training on
new equipment.
Evaluate Alternatives
• Alternative #2
• Partial laboratory Equipment Replacement:
• Identify and replace the most critical or obsolete components,
prioritizing those that significantly impact research efficiency.
• Advantages: Cost-effective approach; targets the most urgent needs
while spreading out the financial impact.
• Considerations: May require careful planning to ensure compatibility
with existing systems.
Evaluate Alternatives
• Alternative #3
• Equipment Maintenance and Refurbishment Program:
• Implement a proactive maintenance and refurbishment program to
extend the lifespan of existing hardware. This may involve regular
inspections, repairs, and upgrades to keep the equipment functional.
• Advantages: Cost-effective; maximizes the value of existing assets.
• Considerations: Requires skilled technicians; may not be suitable for
all types of equipment.
Make a Decision
• Considering the situation of the equipment laboratory today that has
a lot of very old equipments that were like from 10 years ago and also
taking a lot of time to replace or even request(atleast a year) a new
equipment.
• It could be good to consider Alternative #2 which is Partial Laboratory
Equipment Replacement, which can be a strategic decision that
balances the need for equipment upgrades with financial
considerations.
Evaluate and Adapt decision results
• After implementing the decision to pursue Partial Laboratory
Equipment Replacement, it's crucial to conduct a thorough evaluation
of the results.
• Monitor Implementation Progress: Regularly monitor the progress of
the partial replacement plan. Keep track of the replacement schedule,
budget adherence, and any unexpected issues that may arise during
implementation.
• Gather feedback from laboratory staff, students, and faculty who are
directly impacted by the equipment replacement. This feedback can
provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the decision.
