What students at our school

think of modern gender roles

By Bozena, Valeria and Felicity
Q3 – Do you agree with modern gender
roles?
• We thought that more males would answer yes because historically, they
have not been systematically oppressed because of their gender
• Half of the respondents said yes, the other half said no - it was quite
an equal split gender-wise
• From our feedback, we had a few people ask us to define 'modern
gender roles' - we meant the stereotype that women should look after the
children and take care of household chores, and men should be the
breadwinners
Q4 – Have you ever felt discriminated against
because of your gender?
• The results from question 4 were again, quite an even split
• We had no expectations in regards to the answers for this question
Q5 – Have you participated in a protest for
equal rights?
• 2/14 respondents have participated in a protest for equal rights - both of
which were females
• We did not expect anyone to answer yes to this question because of the age
range of respondents (16-17)
• Teenagers may not be able to go to protests because of their lack of
independence (parents may not let them go to protests)
• Because of the media, protests have a violent stigma, which may be another
reason why teenagers may not go (or may not be allowed to go) to protests
Q6 – Would you consider yourself a feminist?

• We thought that more females than males would answer yes to question 6
because in post-modern society, women are more proactive about
speaking out about their rights
• 'Feminism' is a term that is often misunderstood and can be seen as a
movement against men (which it's not)
• The results from the questionnaire supported our prediction - 5/7 girls
consider themselves feminists whereas no male respondents considered
themselves a feminists
Q7 — Have you ever changed your behaviour because
you were scared of what other people will think?

• 9/14 respondents said that they have changed their behaviour because they
were scared of how others would perceive them - 6/7 females said yes, 3/7
males said yes
• In our feedback, we were asked how this relates to the rest of the
questionnaire - a better way to phrase our question would have been 'have
you ever felt like you have to act a certain way because of your gender?'
