Function Of Turbine lubricating oil system

1. Provides a supply of oil to journal bearings and thrust bearing to give an oil wedge as the shaft
rotates.
2. Maintains the temperature of turbine bearings constant at the required level.
3. Provides a medium for hydraulically operating the governor gear and controlling the steam
admission valves.
4. Provides for hydrogen cooled generators a sealing medium to prevent hydrogen leaking out
along the shaft.

 Purpose of lube oil system

The lube oil system provides the required lube oil flow for turbine and generator bearings for
cooling and lubricating in all operating conditions like start-up, normal operation and shutdown to
ensure the safety of the shaft and bearings.

Oil Supply

A single oil supply line lubricates and cools the bearing, governs and operates the hydraulic
actuators and safety and protective devices.
During start-up & shut-down, aux oil pump supplies the control oil. Once the turbine speed is more
than 90% 2700 rpm, the main oil pump (M.O.P) takes over It draws oil from main tank.
The lubricating oil passes through oil cooler, before can be supplied to the bearing (Under
emergency, lube oil can be supplied by a DC oil pump). Before the turbine is turned or barred,
Jacking oil pump (2 nos.) supplies high pressure oil to the jack up the TG shaft to prevent
boundary lubrication and also supplies high pressure oil to drive the hydraulic motor (turning
gear).
How system works.

 Normal operation

During normal operation, a gear type main oil pump MAV21AP011 that is driven via a gear
from the turbine shaft supplies the entire lube oil flow. The self-priming pump takes the oil
from the lube oil tank MAV02BB001.
 During start-up of the turbo set or during turning gear operation the check valve MAV21AA001
prevents that bearing oil is flowing back into the lube oil tank via the main pump clearances.
A hole in this check valve safeguards the lubrication of the main oil pump during start-up.

Two oil vapor exhausters MAV02AN001/002 are provided. The oil vapor exhausters maintain
a small pressure below atmosphere in the oil tank, the oil drain pipes and the bearing
pedestal. It removes the oil vapor from the tank, but also prevents oil from leaking at the
bearings.

The lube oil supplied by the main oil pump and/or auxiliary oil pump is passed through one of
the oil coolers MAV22AC001/002. Downstream of the coolers, two 100% capacity oil filters
MAV23AT001 are installed, which are arranged in parallel.
How system works.

 Start-up / shutdown

During run-up, shutdown and turning gear operation the main oil pump MAV21AP011 cannot
supply the necessary quantity of lube oil. Due to this, the auxiliary lube oil pump (centrifugal
pump with AC motor) has to be switched on prior to start-up of the turbo set. When the turbine has
reached about 90% of rated speed the auxiliary lube oil pump is switched off automatically.

During run-down of the turbo set, the auxiliary lube oil pump is automatically started (together
with the jacking oil pumps) when turbine speed decreases to 90% of rated speed.
How system works.

 Abnormal operation

In case of a failure of the lube oil supply the auxiliary lube oil pump is started via three
pressure transmitters MAV40CP103/104/105 (limit value < 60% in 2 out of 3). Delay 10 sec

If the auxiliary lube oil pump (AC pump) fails, the emergency oil pump MAV21AP031
(centrifugal pump with DC motor) takes over the cooling and lubrication of the turbine
bearings enabling the turbine to safe run down

If the auxiliary lube oil pump fails or the lube oil pressure drops
very quickly below 40% the emergency lube oil pump is switched on without delay and a
second switch on command is given to the auxiliary pump.

The pressure in the lube oil header is supervised by three pressure transmitter. In case of
lube oil pressure drop down to 60% after a 10 second delay turbine is tripped. Lube oil
pressure drop down to 40% the turbine is tripped immediately.
A safe run down is provided by emergency lube oil pump.
