• A group of words established by a usage as having meaning not deducible from those of the
individual words.
OR

• Idioms are fun useful expressions that usually can’t be understood by defining the separate words.
• Also, idioms are phrases which do not make sense literally.
Then how do we understand idioms???

Idioms are basically figures of speech ,


So you can simply try and guess their meanings from the given context
EXAMPLES
It’s Raining Cats And Dogs
Literal Meaning
Hey!
Look, Cats and dogs are
falling from the sky.
We need to save them
Whereas it means,
It is raining really hard.

It has nothing to do
with cats and dogs
Let’s use it in some sentences.

• We won’t be able to play cricket today as it is raining cats and dogs.


• I believe it’s unsafe to drive the car right now as it is raining cats and
dogs.
• The sky suddenly turned grey and it rained cats and dogs for 20
minutes.
Turn A Blind Eye
It actually means
Refusing to acknowledge something which one knows to be real
Or
To pretend something didn’t happened when it actually had happened and not giving it
