American Contribution of
Occupation in the Influences of Americans in the
Philippines Americans in the Philippine’s
Philippines education
Educational system
The American occupation of the Philippines lasted
1898 -
from 1898 to 1946, following the Spanish-American
1946
War. It began with the acquisition of the
Philippines from Spain through the Treaty of Paris.
The period was marked by significant resistance
from Filipino nationalists, leading to the
Philippine-American War (1899-1902). Despite
initial conflict, American rule brought about
modern infrastructure, education reforms, and
democratic institutions. However, it also entailed
economic exploitation and cultural suppression.
Efforts towards self-governance began early,
culminating in full independence for the
Philippines in 1946.
The influence of
the United States
on the educational
system in the
Philippines .
01

Introduction of the Public School System: One of the most notable

impacts was the establishment of a public school system modelled
after the American system. The Thomasites, a group of American
teachers, were sent to the Philippines in the early 1900s to serve as
educators and help implement this system. They laid the foundation
for modern education in the country.
02

Emphasis on English Language: The United States introduced

English as the medium of instruction in Philippine schools, which
remains the primary language of instruction in many educational
institutions today. This policy has had a lasting impact on Philippine
society, as English proficiency became a significant factor in
education, employment, and social mobility.
03

Curriculum Reforms: American influence brought about changes in

the curriculum, with an emphasis on Western education, including
subjects like mathematics, science, history, and literature. The
curriculum was structured to align more closely with American
educational standards and priorities.
04

Teacher Training and Professionalization: The American period saw

efforts to train Filipino teachers according to American educational
methods and standards. This contributed to the professionalization
of the teaching profession in the Philippines.
05

Establishment of Higher Education Institutions: The United States

played a role in the establishment and development of higher
education institutions in the Philippines, including the University of
the Philippines, which was founded in 1908 as a result of American
colonial policy.
06

Influence on Educational Administration: American influence also

extended to educational administration, with the introduction of
systems and structures inspired by American models. This included
the organization of school districts, standardized testing, and
administrative procedures.
During the American occupation of the Philippines, significant
contributions were made to the educational system. These include the
establishment of a public school system modelled after the American
model, the introduction of English as the primary medium of
instruction, teacher training programs to improve the quality of
educators, curricular reforms emphasizing subjects like mathematics
and science, the introduction of Western educational concepts, and
the establishment of higher education institutions. These
contributions laid the foundation for the modern Philippine
educational system, expanding access to education, improving
quality, and shaping the values and priorities of education in the
country.
