SUBJECT TEACHER
Definition of a Parabola
A parabola is the set of all points ( )
in a plane that are equidistant from a
fixed line called the directrix, and a fixed
point called the focus which is not on the
line. A parabola has an axis of symmetry
perpendicular to its directrix and passes
through its vertex. The vertex of the
parabola is the midpoint of the segment
connecting the focus and the directrix.
Equation of a Parabola with vertex
at the origin
Note: | | is the distance of the directrix
to the vertex and focus to the vertex.
The distance of the directrix to the
vertex is the same as the distance of
focus to vertex. | | is the distance of the
focus to the directrix
Therefore, the parabola ( y + 5)2 =-16(x-2 ) has a
vertex of ( 2 -5); value of p =(-4) ; axis of
symmetry of y = -5 ; focus of (-2,-5 ); and directrix
of x = 6 .
Activity 1: A. Write the standard form of the
equation of the parabola with the given
focus or directrix and vertex at (0,0).
1. Focus (0,3 ) Equation: ___________________
2. Focus (5,0 ) Equation: ____________________
3. Focus (-6,0 ) Equation:_____________________

4. Directrix : y= -4
Equation:________________________
5. Directrix: x = -4
Equation: ________________________
