Malnourished individuals are less likely to achieve their full potential in terms of education and economic
productivity, and they earn less income than well-nourished peers, making it difficult to break the cycle of
poverty (Victora et al. 2008).
When a high proportion of a population is malnourished, it weakens the entire economy, potentially
reducing a country’s gross domestic product (GDP) by as much as 3 percent (World Bank 2006)
Definisi Istilah
• Gizi : Segala yang berhubungan dengan proses organisme menggunakan makanan
yang dikonsumsi secara normal melalui proses digesti, absobsi, transportasi,
penyimpanan, metabolisme dan pengeluaran zat-zat untuk mempertahankan
kehidupan, pertumbuhan dan fungsi normal dari organ-organ
• Zat Gizi : Substansi organik yang dibutuhkan organisme untuk fungsi normal dari
sistem tubuh, pertumbuhan, pemeliharaan kesehatan
• Status Gizi : Keadaan yang diakibatkan oleh keseimbangan antara asupan zat gizi dari
makanan dengan kebutuhan zat gizi yang diperlukan untuk metabolisme tubuh

GIZI KESMAS
• The promotion and maintenance of nutrition – related
health and well - being of populations through the
organised efforts and informed choices of society
(World Public Health Nutrition Association ,2007).
• PHN focuses on the promotion of good health
through nutrition and physical activity and the
prevention of related illness in the population (Yngve
et al., 1999, European Union).

• Nutrition has a direct effect on growth,
development, reproduction, and both physical
and mental well-being.
• It is one of the most important factors for the
health of an individual or a community, and is,
consequently, a fundamental issue in modern
public health.

• Improved nutrition has made a major
contribution to better health in recent ages.
• Public health attempts to ensure all groups in
the population have adequate, but not
excessive, intake of the basic food groups,
essential vitamins and minerals for growth,
health maintenance, and physical activity.
