Warm Up

Buddy Charades

Similar to charades, the class has to divide into pairs.


Each pair will be given three (3) sets of phrases to
guess. One of the pairs has to act out the phrase
without sound, while the partner guesses.

between or among persons with the use of verbal and
nonverbal cues.

● the use of words or speech in sending messages and

● the act of expressing ideas in ways that do not involve or go


beyond using words.
● uses body language, appearance, voice, and environment as

Types of Nonverbal Communication

Proxemics
● how the space or distance between the sender and the
receiver affects their communication
● includes intimate distance, personal distance, social distance,
and public distance

Examples:
standing on a platform or stage while giving a speech
sitting right next to a close friend

Kinesics

● the use of body language in communication


● includes gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions

Examples:

○ nodding at an acquaintance while passing by him or her on


the street
○ raising one eyebrow while listening to someone’s story

Chronemics

● refers to the role of time in the communication process

Examples:

○ showing up early to work each day


○ being on time to a get-together with friends

● the use of touch to convey meaning in a conversation

● the tone, speed, and volume of a speaker’s voice

Synthesis Activity

1. Form groups of five.


2. Each group should come up with their own version of a
short silent movie. They should act out a short scene in
front of the class, making sure to convey the situation
without the use of words.
3. The rest of the class will observe as each group performs.
Assignment

Observe the way someone converses with another person.


List down the nonverbal cues you notice, what they indicate,
and identify what type of nonverbal communication each is.
