Unit1
Curtin- Hammett Principle
• It is a principle in chemical kinetics proposed by David Yarrow curtin &
Lowis planck Hammett.
• It sates that “for a reaction that has a pair of reactive intermediate or
reactant that interconvert rapidly, each going irreversibly to a
different product, the product ratio will depend on difference in
energy between two conformers & free energy of transition state
going to each product. As a result the product distribution will not
necessarily reflect the equilibrium distribution of the two
intermediates.
D K2 B K A K1 C
3 classes of reaction:
• Less stable conformer react more quickly:
• Both reactant react at same rate
• More stable react more quickly
Thermodynamic vs Kinetic control
• Thermodynamic control : Under reversible condition the ratio of
possible product is determined by the relative stability of each product
is determined by the relative stability of each product, measured by its
standard free energy the composition of equilibrium mixture does not
depend on how fast each product is formed in reaction .

• Kinetic control : when quantity of each possible product is

determined by how fast each product has formed & it is not a function
of relative stability of each product is known as kinetic control.
