Subject verb agreement

Subject verb agreement

The verb matches the subject in a sentence.


Rule 01

 The verb matches the head-word of the subject. If the


head-word is singular, use a singular verb; if it's plural,
use a plural verb.
For example-
 Inc: The quality of the mangoes are good.
 Cor: The quality of the mangoes is good.
Rule 02

 When multiple persons are the subject, the order is 2nd person, 3rd person, and then 1st person.
 Cor- You, my friends, and I are going on a tour.
 Inc- My friends, you, and I is going on a tour.
 But when accepting blame or confessing guilt, it's 1st person, 3rd person, and then 2nd person.
 For example-
 “I, he, and you are guilty.”
 “We, she, and you are responsible.”
Rule 03

 Everybody, everyone, somebody, someone, nobody, none


are grammatically singular so the verbs will also be
singular.
 For example-
 “Everyone has(not have) an aim in life.”
 “No one likes(not like) a lair.”
Rule 04

 Iftwo or more subjects are linked with “and” it is counted


as plural and the verb will be accordingly.
 For example-
 “Harry and Sezal are brilliant students.”
Rule 05

 Nouns/pronouns after Each, every, no, none, no one etc. will be


singular.
 For example-
 “Each student has got a prize.”
Rule 06

 Iftwo or more subjects are joined by “or” / “nor” / “but”


then the verb will be according to the last noun/pronoun.
 For instance-
“ You or Joonie was present there.”
Rule 07

 The verb after collective noun is singular.


 For example-
 “The Jury is giving the verdict today.”
Rule 08

 If"the" is used before adjectives, then it is considered


plural. So, the verb will be plural.
 For example-
 “The poor are always suffering.”
Rule 09

 Even if the units of distance, measurement, weight, time, age, money, currency etc. is plural the verb will be
singular.
 For example –
 Cor-Fifty miles is a long way.
 Inc- Fifty miles are a long way.
 Look at this one-
 “10 dollars have too much for that candy bar”
 But While talking about the passing of time, if the amount of time is plural then the verb will be plural.
 For example- “Twelve years have passed.”
Rule 10

 The verb after the relative noun will be according to the


noun/pronoun used right before the relative pronoun.
 For example-
 “It is I who am responsible.”
