INTERODUCTION
• The
life undersea was always known to us as “THE SILENT
WORLD”.
• However with the deepening of the investigation of this world the
reality has proven not to be as silent as was initially thought.
• in fact sound plays a vital role in the life of many marine organisms.
• In this presentation, the source and the characteristics of noise in
the sea, the significance of sound to marine organisms, and the
impacts of noise on marine organisms are explained.
CONTINUE…

• the studies about the impact of noise on marine organisms are

mainly on adult fish and mammals, which account for more than
50% and 20% of all the cases reported.
• sound from cargo ships, sonar, seismic testing, drilling, pile
drivers, recreational holiday ships, and etc.
SOURCES OF SOUNDS IN THE SEA

The sources of sound in the sea consist of into :

1) Biotic sound produced by fish, marine mammals and other
marine organisms, and are important to communicate orient
mate and prey detection echolocation.
SOURCES OF SOUNDS IN THE SEA

2) Abiotic sound are classified into two…

a) Natural background sound such as sea waves, raindrops on
the ocean surface, tides and also sea quakes these are
natural background sound.
b) Anthropogenic or man made sound emitted by human
activities and can be subdivided by high intensity impulsive
noise and low frequency stationary
HIGH INTENSITY IMPULSIVE NOISE;

Underwater Blasting Pile Driver

LOW FREQUENCY STATIONARY NOISE

For example :-
 Cargo ships
 Survey Vassals
 Submarine
 Low frequency sonar platform
THE EFFECTS OF ANTHROPOGENIC NOISE ON MARINE
ORGANISMS

Studies showed anthropogenic noise can cause;

I. Auditory masking leading to cochlear damage, changes in
individual and social behavior, altered metabolisms, hampered
recruitment and subsequently effect the health and service
functions of marine ecosystems.
II. Noise may cause stress in animals, increase the risk of
mortality by unbalancing predator-prey interaction, and interfere
with sound-based orientation and communication, especially in
reproductive contexts.
SOLUTIONS
These potential solutions include;
Redesigning the propellers of vessels.
Changing their shipping routes.
 Using lower-intensity seismic vibrations and
Noise reduction technologies to reduce the sound of deep sea
drilling (employing acoustic bubble curtains in energy generation
stations)
OCEAN NOISE POLLUTION LEVELS DURING
COVID-19

• When the world was undergoing a strict lockdown, and human

movement were restricted, that was the time when wildlife
enjoyed their natural habitat without human interference.
• During those 2 years period marine mammals returned to their
natural habitats and some fish populations has increased due to
decreased fishing activities.
CONCLUSION

• As discussed, the sources of noises are either biotic or abiotic

sounds, of either man made or nature.
• Since we have no power over the natural noise, lets focus on
our part and struggle to decrease the disruption of the
ecosystem of the marine organsms,
